Well for start, there would be no Marina, nor any other female pop star or artist today, for all that matters, If it was not for Madonna. Not so long ago, it was a widespread social taboo for women to sing as soloists. Madonna broke that taboo.

The eroticism is also something that is not stereotype bound, largely thanks to people like Madonna. You're actually embracing the stereotype of "chaste" women, when You claim that Madonna acts "naughtier" than she really is. Men don't ask women to act like that, they actually want them to be what feminists preach - a chaste housewife, or hard working ( again chaste, modest ) business women, who's husband is allowed to cheat all the time, while to women must not even look other men. She ( Madonna ) acts like she wants to act, she is who she is. She does not let the role of "mother" , "housewife" or any other define her, she can be all or none, when she wants to, and not when men or feminists tell her to be some of it, either.

Madonna "invented" the pop music, as genre, which is now the media, pop "stars" , and actual artists such as Marina use to "express themselves". She spent her whole musical carrier fighting for the rights of the women, just last year she enabled many women on Middle East to get education, in places where they would otherwise be put to death, If just they thought about educating themselves. Government would not give them as much as penny, so that they could build a room to at least teach women to read, and Madonna had built them a school.

I could go on, but this is neither the place neither the time. Besides, one who cares to acquaint themselves with her work on women rights, and empowerment will find that an easy task, as long as they really want to.

And You got it wrong, Miley's people practically begged Madonna to come and perform together with Miley. She has done Miley a favor that's it. Because she is an empathetic human being and most relevant living artist who can afford herself to defend a lost case that Miley is.

The 'his story' isn't actually there. This song isn't about just woman suffering because of gender roles and hypersexualization in the media, it's about men too. She just has a focus on woman because she is one. A lot of it is her personal experience.

***** Alright, to sum it up as best as I can... Think of it this way for THOUSANDS of years women were thought of only as sex objects and were bartered as such. Women were based on how good looking they were, how good they were in bed and how many children can they have, essentially treating women like broodmares (honestly it still happens in some countries to this day). The feminist movement gave women freedoms and to be thought of more than just sex objects only happened within the last ONE HUNDRED years. We still live in a very much patriarchal society and that's very much still hardwired into everyone's brain, whether we think we do or not. For example, girls are taught from a very young age by society that their worth is based on how they look. It's hard wired in a girl's brain that her only worth is her looks when people always comment on "Look how pretty/cute you are!" Women still think of themselves subconsciously about how sexually appealing we are, or more honestly, focus on how NOT sexually appealing we are. For instance there's a commercial where it talks about how women every day have an "I hate my body." moment. It's not just about how the media portrays women (which is a huge detriment) but how we constantly compare ourselves every day based on how sexually appealing we are. Like the lyrics say, think about how freeing it would be if "history could set you free".

Can I also add in here that women, although treated as sex objects, are shamed for having sex. So, in our society, it's totally fine for a woman to be treated like an object made purely for male pleasure and to continue the human race, but if she indulges in that outside of marriage then suddenly she is worthless because she isn't "pure" anymore. The concept of virginity (that people are only pure until they have sex-but it's mostly directed towards women) was created to scare women into not having sex until marriage because otherwise no one would want them, while men could run round having as many partners as they wanted. And that's not even talking about how women are respected as "baby machines" and how they are expected to take their husband's last name

What exactly has Madonna done to combat gender stereotypes of women in pop music? A lot of the things that Marina touches upon in this song are a result of the overt sexualisation of pop music which Madonna introduced, pigeon-holing female artists to act certain ways in order to gain success i.e. "acting naughtier than they really are..." Even today, she feels she has to grind up against Miley Cyrus in order to maintain relevancy, while her creative endeavours flounder.

Sorry, I just wanted to point out that Miley is a very big feminist, she is definitely not a lost case. She is one of the rare pop stars out there that is true to herself and has completely broken out from the stereotype that girls should be conservative. Miley is wearing whatever the heck she wants, but because she's a girl, she is getting a lot of hate for it and doesn't seem to care because she's having fun. So for my drama audition, I brought in an Electra Heart CD from the library to sing 'Primadonna'. People made such a big deal of 'Bubblegum B*tch'. Okay. It says 'b*tch'. So what? They also made a big deal about this song, 'Sex Yeah' just because it says 'sex' in the title. I don't think they know the inner meaning of this song. This song just gets me into this depressive mood because society just sucks. She tells the truth in less than 4 minutes, and though the song is upbeat, I'd be crying rather than dancing because of the lyrics. We've come a long way (thanks feminism), but we've still got a long way to go.

I think this song just explains how people tend to base their self-worth off of their sexuality and how there’s so many mixed signals surrounding it. Plus, I don’t really see this song as just a “feminist anthem.” I think it really can apply to everybody. Men and women. It’s more of a societal message. There’s so many stigmas and confusing messages surrounding sex for both men and women. Men from day one are told they are only valid if they have many women, and if they don’t they are a loser. Women are told many different things, ranging from if you have too many men you are a whore, and if you don’t have any men at all you are a frigid virgin. Both sexes have it difficult in that aspect.

To me feminism and equalism is the same thing. There are radicals in every social group whether they are the majority or minority, I think it's important to remember they all may not think the same way about what it means to be a feminist. I wouldn't mind identifying myself as a feminist if it means that women are equal to men on a social and political standard. That's what it means to me. Raise your daughter the way you raise your son, that's how I think of it. I just don't understand why people generalize a group. I love this song,and I am half a feminist.
This song is about sterotypes relating to gender,such as 'Women go play with dollies and dishes while Men play with guns and paper.'.
Marina's singing about that she doesn't want to be the sterotype society was forcing her to be.

ChocoCrazeh Hm. Yes. Women totally have the same rights as men. Yup. We don't get blamed for rape, we totally get payed the same as men, we don't get treated as sexy objects, we never get shit on when we are in positions of power, we don't get denied rights to our own bodies (such as abortion, birth control in some places now). Yup. This never happens ever. The world is so equal. Feminists are so silly, huh?

You have a great point. Men do get treated like that, but less often than women.

And I'm not rooting for anyone. Never did I say all men treat women like this, or that men are lesser than women. I did not say these things don't happen to men. It is equally as important to deal with sexism involving men and women. All I tried to do was point out that men and women are not as equal as you say they are in society.

Also, women are more equal in some places than others.
