When You Sleep

One foot in front of the other
Keep breathing just like they taught you
You politely asked to take a walk with me
I would've married you there underneath the trees
Is it real, this thing?
Is it real, ooh, this thing?

I could make you happy
I could make you love me
I could disappear completely
I could be your love song
I could be long gone
I could be a ghost in your eardrum
When you sleep, will it be with me?
When you sleep, will it be with me?

I swore I saw you in a dream
All dressed in white and wide smile
You politely asked to take a walk with me
And I married you there underneath the trees
Can you feel the beat of my heartbeat beating through me?
Can you feel the beat of my heartbeat beating through?

I could make you happy
I could make you love me
I could disappear completely
I could be your love song
I could be long gone
I could be a ghost in your eardrum
When you sleep, will it be with me?
When you sleep, will it be with me?

How did I miss you, when I didn't know you? (Ooh)
How did I miss you, when I didn't know you? (Ooh)
How did I miss you, when I didn't know you? (Ooh)
How did I miss you, when I didn't know you? (Ooh)

I could make you happy
I could make you love me
I could disappear completely
I could be your love song
I could be long gone
I could be a ghost in your eardrum
I could make you happy
I could make you love me
I could disappear completely

Be with me when you sleep
Be with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mary Lambert's "When You Sleep" are full of yearning for a love that seems unattainable. The first verse talks about the importance of taking things one step at a time and focusing on breathing – likely a reference to anxiety or overwhelm. The singer then has a powerful fantasy about getting married under the trees with the person she's singing to. She questions the reality of this feeling, wondering if it's possible for them to be together.

The chorus is a plea to be loved: "I could make you happy, I could make you love me." The singer is willing to do anything to get the person's attention, including disappearing completely or being a ghost in their ear. She wants to be in their dreams, to be with them when they sleep. The second verse describes a dream where the two of them are married, and the emotions are intensified by the line, "Can you feel the beat of my heartbeat beating through me?" The words convey a sense of the singer's vulnerability and the importance of being seen and recognized by the person she loves.

The pre-chorus repeats the theme of the singer's willingness to do whatever it takes to be with the person, while the outro is a repetition of the phrase "How did I miss you, when I didn't know you?" which suggests a kind of predestination, a sense that they were always meant to be together.

Overall, "When You Sleep" is a song about the intensity of desire and the longing for connection. It expresses the way that one person can feel like the missing piece of another's life, and the desperation that can arise from that feeling.

I love how in the beginning, it's elegant and soft. She's trying to tell them how much they mean to her and then through the song, she gets louder until she's practically yelling at him to see her and feel the things she's feeling because God, she can't be the only one feeling all of this. Because she can be anything for them and make them the happiest person on earth if they just let her, but towards the end she knows. And they know. And they both know that none of this is going to happen and she's pleading, but she knows it won't get her anywhere. She's so desperately in love with this person and they don't feel it and that's the tragedy of living. Sometimes the things we hold onto so tightly are the things that push at us the hardest to let go. Beautiful song, by the way <3
