The band's first record, Fatboy (1992), established the band as a favorite of the same 1990s scene that became popular through bands such as the Dave Matthews Band, Phish, and Widespread Panic. moe. has toured with the 1997 Furthur Festival, appeared at Woodstock '99, have played in Central Park, were the opening band for The Allman Brothers and The Who, and performed at Radio City Music Hall on New Years Eve 2006 and 2007.
They also host the annual festival moe.down at Snow Ridge Ski Area in Turin, NY. Started in 2000, the festival runs for three days and occurs every Labor Day weekend. The festival has attracted a wide variety of musical talent. Acts range from newer bands just emerging onto the scene (such as Tea Leaf Green, Nellie McKay and Raq) to big name acts and jam rock staples, such as Les Claypool, Blues Traveler, and Mike Gordon (of Phish fame); to pop rock icons, such as Leo Kottke, The Flaming Lips, The Violent Femmes; and most recently, Perry Farrell. Each year, the amount of moe.down attendees has steadily increased. moe.down I attracted around 3,000 people while moe.down VI in 2005, had attracted close to 7,000.
During an interview, guitarist Al Schnier was asked to describe moe. for those who have never heard their music: "It's an amalgamation of a wide variety of the history of rock, all regurgitated and recycled through the eyes, ears, hands, whatever of the guys in our band and all of that with a sense of adventure, a sense of humor, also a constant desire to push the envelope. All in this arena of taking chances, improvising live, and making things up on the spot."

The mornings come my way
I′m an ordinary man
Slick words slipping through your mouth
And i try to hear you out
I'm just playing in the band
It′s just a karma fallout
It's just a hole i fell in
Long days summer o i
Yeah I'm reeling this time
I guess I′m hauling it in
Chorus:
Song we like will live forever
It′s not design, it's not the band
Right this time, wrong forever
Can′t decide, summer o i
Imagine if we had pictures of the fall
We could laugh at them all
And fiddle our cares away
Or if I had a crystal ball
My bank accounts so small
I wouldn't bet on LA
Jet trash set on the sun
Third satellite from
Spinning me round
Bright days summer o i
I guess I′ve done it this time
I'm an extraordinary man
Chorus:
Song we like will live forever
It′s not design, it's not the band
Right this time, wrong forever
Can't decide, summer o i
Song we like will live forever
It′s not design, it′s not the band
Right this time, wrong forever
Can't decide, summer o i
Summer o i
The song "Summer o i" by moe. is a reflection on life and the decisions made along the way. The first verse talks about the transition from a dark night to a new day, and how the singer is just an ordinary person. The second verse describes the frustration of trying to understand someone's slick words, while being a mere player in the game of life. The chorus suggests that there are some things that will last forever, such as a good song, but other things are destined to fail.
The bridge of the song offers two different scenarios: looking back on a fall and laughing, or having a crystal ball to predict the future. Both ideas suggest that life would be easier if we had a visual representation of what is to come. However, the reality is that we have to make our decisions based on what we know at the time. The final verse describes being spun around by the third satellite from the sun, suggesting that there are larger forces at play in life. The singer acknowledges that he is an extraordinary man, but still has to live with the choices he has made.
Overall, "Summer o i" is probably about making peace with the past and accepting that we cannot change what has happened. It suggests that some things will last forever, such as good songs, while other things are destined to fail. The song is open to interpretation, but the themes of acceptance and reflection seem to be prevalent.
