look after you

Now won't you listen honey, while I say,
How could you tell me that you're goin' away?
Don't say that we must part,
Don't break your baby's heart

You know I've loved you for these many years,
Loved you night and day,
Oh! honey baby, can't you see my tears?
Listen while I say

After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had

There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Someday, when you grow lonely
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me only
After you've gone, after you've gone away

After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You're gonna feel blue, and you're gonna feel sad
You're gonna feel bad
And you'll miss, and you'll miss,
And you'll miss the bestest pal you ever had

There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
But baby, think what you're doin'
I'm gonna haunt you so, I'm gonna taunt you so

It's gonna drive you to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away.

Joi intrigued me. Can a machine really know love? Or at least feel emotion? If they can does this make them sentient? Or are there extra qualifications they would need to have to reach that level of being considered sentient by humans. The fact that Jois (the joi that we’ve been following the entire movie) last words were “I love you” can not have been a mistake. In my opinion I believe she was designed to feel emotion. It was never mentioned in the movie but by watching the movie twice I noticed that Joi showed fear. Genuine fear. Throughout the movie. If she was just a AI to please humans then there would be no need for her code developers to even bother attempting to know fear or at least know when she should act fearful.

With this in mind It seems like my belief that Joi can infact feel emotion is true. If Joi didn’t show fear when she should, it would represent to the audience that she isn’t actually free thinking.

The only part of the movie that throws a wrench into the works of this argument is when she calls Ryan gosling “Joe”. As the advertising Joi calls him the same thing. But I believe that this may be far fetched attempt at an allegory of human instincts. Humans may be free thinking but our animal instinct determines many of our day to day actions and responses to perceived threats and desires. Calling someone Joe would be written into her code, hence an instinct but she is unaware of this being in her code. It’s just there, she feels like she is the one in control but the instinct is the one controlling her.

In the end I really felt bad for Joi and Ryan gosling. It’s strange as neither was human. As in born as human. The movie really does a twist at the end to prove this point that they are both made not born. However I feel like there is a strong case that “Joe” is human. Most people would accept that. Joi though in my opinion wouldn’t be human, yet I felt upset at her passing like I would seeing any other human character dying. Joi is a machine and there are millions of her. Yet there was only one of that particular Joi. Her memories and love for Joe made her unique to the other Jois and so something special was lost when she “dies”? Destroyed?

If she truly was capable of experiencing emotion and was free of thought with the concessions of her “instinct”. I’d consider her to be living in the ethical sense, not literal. And I’d believe the value of her life was equal to that of a full born human person.
