In Bloom
nirvana nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sell the kids for food
Weather changes moods
Spring is here again
Reproductive glands

He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means
And I say he's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means
And I say yeah

We can have some more
Nature is a whore
Bruises on the fruit
Tender age in bloom

He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means
And I say he's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means
And I say yeah

He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means
And I say he's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means
Knows not what it means

Knows not what it means
And I say yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "In Bloom" by Nirvana is a commentary on the nature of the music industry and the way that fans often misunderstand the meaning behind the lyrics of their favorite songs. The first verse sets the scene, with the singer suggesting that people are selling out their values in order to make money (selling the kids for food) and that the weather can have a profound effect on our moods. The line "Reproductive glands" is a reference to the fact that spring is typically associated with fertility and new beginnings.

The chorus is where the song really takes off, repeating the same lines about a fan who likes to sing along and shoot his gun, but doesn't really understand the meaning of the lyrics. The singer is frustrated that people are simply taking his words at face value without trying to understand the deeper message behind them. The line "Nature is a whore" is particularly striking, suggesting that people are willing to exploit anything for their own gain.

Ultimately, "In Bloom" is a powerful indictment of the commercialization of music and the way that fans can sometimes miss the point of what the artist is trying to say. It's a song that speaks to the frustration that many artists feel when their work is co-opted by others for their own purposes.

If they WERE around in the 1960s then they would of been as big as the Beatles.
if not then bigger

@garethjones3227

Don't agree on that one dude, i think they would have been to avant garde for that early on in music history. The worlds ears just wasn't ready back then. Just take the pixies as an example, they were way ahead of thier time and would have been better recieved between 95-05' imho.
It's the whole back to the future johnny b goode scenario.
