Speak My Mind
nyck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a crackle on the telephone
But you say that you need to know
But what you gonna say when I tell you...
What you gonna say when I break your heart
You're still a long way out from the bottom
But I'm still gonna speak my mind when I get the chance to
But I'm still gonna speak my mind
But I'm still gonna speak my mind when I get the chance to
But I'm still gonna speak my mind
And so I tell her that I'm coming home
I worry what she'll do while she's alone
Put your arms up high and put a t-shirt on
You get so cold before you get warm
I think we finally found the bottom
But I'm still gonna speak my mind when I get the chance to
But I'm still gonna speak my mind
But I'm still gonna speak my mind when I get the chance to
But I'm still gonna speak my mind
But I'm still gonna speak my mind when I get the chance to
But I'm still gonna speak my mind

But I'm still gonna speak my mind when I get the chance to
But I'm still gonna speak my mind

Overall Meaning

In “Speak My Mind,” Nyck cautionarily opens up about being forthcoming in the relationships he is involved in when things go awry. The song is about being transparent in a romantic relationship and expressing one’s thoughts and feelings, even if it leads to potentially painful results. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as Nyck sings about a phone call filled with static, implying that there is an issue in communication. He asks what the other person will say when he reveals something that may hurt them, lamenting how difficult it is to speak his mind.

However, in the following lines, Nyck resolves to be honest despite the potential of upsetting his partner. He speaks about how even though his partner might think they have hit rock bottom, he will continue to express himself when given the chance. Nyck continues singing about coming home and worrying about what his partner will do while he’s away, hinting at trust issues. He advises his partner to put on a t-shirt when they get cold, almost as if he is reminding them to take care of themselves when he’s not around. Though it appears they might have reached the bottom of their relationship, Nyck remains firm in his decision to speak his mind.
