Chill out, what you yelling for?
Lay back, it′s all been done before
And if you could only let it be
You will see

I like you the way you are
When we're drivin′ in your car
And you're talking to me one on one
But you've become

Somebody else ′round everyone else
Watching your back like you can′t relax
You're tryin′ to be cool
You look like a fool to me
Tell me

Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated?
I see the way you′re
Acting like you're somebody else, gets me frustrated
Life′s like this you
You fall and you crawl and you break and you take
What you get and you turn it into
Honesty, you promised me I'm never gonna find you fake it

No, no, no
No, no, no
No, no, no
No, no, no
No, no, no

You come over unannounced
Dressed up like you're somethin′ else
Where you are ain′t where it's at you see, you′re making me

Laugh out when you strike your pose
Take off all your preppy clothes
You know, you're not fooling anyone
When you become

Somebody else ′round everyone else
Watchin' your back like you can′t relax
You're tryin' to be cool
You look like a fool to me
Tell me

Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?
I see the way you′re
Acting like you′re somebody else, gets me frustrated
Life's like this you
You fall and you crawl and you break and you take
What you get and you turn it into
Honesty, you promised me, I′m never gonna find you fake it

No, no, no
No, no, no
No, no, no
No, no, no
No, no no

No, no no
No, no no

No, no no

Overall Meaning

Olivia O'Brien's "Complicated" talks about how people tend to put on a façade when they're around other people. The first verse tells us to chill out and not waste energy getting angry about things that have already happened. If we can let things be, we can see things clearly, and that's when we can appreciate people for who they really are.

The chorus is all about how the person the singer is talking to is pretending to be someone else when around others. They're trying to act cool when they're really not, and it's frustrating because the singer likes them just the way they are. The line "life's like this, you fall and you crawl and you break and you take what you get and you turn it into" is a reminder that we all go through hard times, but it's how we handle them that counts. The singer also mentions that honesty is important and that they were promised they would never be faked out by this person.

The second verse continues with the theme of pretending to be someone you're not. The other person is dressed up and trying to be something they're not. The singer again emphasizes that they can see through this façade and that the other person is not fooling anyone.

Overall, "Complicated" is an ode to authenticity and being true to yourself.
