Once A Tree debuted with a self-titled EP and the single "Light Me Up". Their first professional EP Thousand Lives, released in 2015 under Toronto-based Foreseen Entertainment, followed the single "Howling", inspired by their childhood religion. They continued working with Foreseen, going on to release their first album Phoenix in 2017. Rolling Stone named them "New Artists You Need to Know" and compared them favourably to Phantogram, Crystal Castles, and Chvrches. Phoenix won Best Electronic Music Album at the 2018 Indigenous Music Awards.
The duo released their second album Fool's Paradise independently in 2020. Fool's Paradise was described as more lighthearted than their previous work, which Hayden attributed to coming "to a much happier place in life". The single "Rush" was filmed in Los Angeles, and the acoustic version featured Boy Pape.
Jayli also acts and releases solo music, such as "Child of the Government" about her First Nations father being taken in the Sixties Scoop; Hayden is a visual artist and photographer. They co-write most of their songs, and produce most of their music videos themselves.

I could stay here forever
So I ainโฒt coming down no
No I ain't coming down no
I know I am free to wander
But I could stay here forever
In your arms
In your arms
In your arms
So I aint coming down no
No I aint coming down no
The lyrics of "Coming Down" by Once A Tree reflect the feeling of being in a state of bliss and not wanting to come back to reality. The first verse, "Heavy grip on the stars, I could stay here forever, so I ain't coming down no," describes the singer's metaphorical grasp on the stars, which may represent a state of euphoria or a heightened emotional state. They feel comfortable and safe in this state, and they do not want to leave it.
The second verse, "I know I am free to wander, but I could stay here forever," further emphasizes the singer's desire to stay in this state of ecstasy. They acknowledge that they have the freedom to roam and explore but choose to stay still and enjoy the moment.
The repeated line, "In your arms" provides a sense of security and stability, suggesting that the singer may find comfort in the company of someone they love. The song's overall tone is dreamy and ethereal, with the repeated refrain of "I ain't coming down no" further emphasizing the idea of not wanting to leave a perfect moment.
