Estrellita
ponce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

In "Estrellita," Ponce croons about his longing for a distant star to take pity on him and tell him if his love interest reciprocates his feelings. He addresses the star as "Estrellita del lejano cielo" (little star from the distant sky) and implores it to ease his pain and suffering by answering his burning question. The song is ripe with poetic imagery and serves as an allegory for the endless search for love and meaning in our lives.

Ponce sings of his beloved as if she were a star in the sky, an unattainable object of desire that he can only worship from afar. He likens her to the North Star which guides ships home, saying that his love for her is a guiding light that will lead him to her, even if he knows he will never be with her. He feels that his love for her is so strong that he cannot live without her, begging the star to confirm that she loves him even a little bit so that he can continue on in his quest.

The song is a beautiful and melancholic expression of the human condition which yearns for connection and a sense of belonging. Ponce masterfully conveys the deep pain of unrequited love and speaks to the hope that guides us all in our search for meaning, making "Estrellita" a timeless classic that resonates to this day.

Estrellita del lejano cielo,
Oh little star from the far away skies,

que miras mi dolor,
You witness my pain,

que sabes mi sufrir,
And know my suffering,

baja y di me si me quiere un poco
Please come down and tell me if she loves me a little,

porque yo no puedo sin su amor vivir.
Because I cannot live without her love.

Tú eres estrella, mi faro de amor,
You are the star, my beacon of love,

tú sabes que pronto he de morir.
You know that I will soon die.

Baja y di me si me quiere un poco
Please come down and tell me if she loves me a little,

porque yo no puedo sin su amor vivir.
Because I cannot live without her love.

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and Ray Chen certainly does it justice. I've never heard it played more beautifully.

Agreed!

@MARTIN201199

What a beautiful encore. This is the most delightful version of this Mexican song. It was a cherished song to Heifetz, who I believe, was the first classical violinist to play it, but Ray Chen makes it more sweet, sad and enjoyable at the same time.

The first time I heard this song, I was 17 years old. It was 1967 when “Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution “ violently swept China. In this world, only the artworks that truly touch the human soul will remain to tell the story of our existence, everything else , no matter how great it is, only leaves a flash, like a meteor cross the night sky.

Difficile de ne pas avoir envie de pleurer en écoutant cet air.
Je pense au vers de Baudelaire: "Le violon frémit comme un cœur qu'on afflige".
Merci au compositeur et à l'interprète.
