Their journey began in early 2015 when Sjowgren uploaded a collection of self-recorded, guitar-based songs that were subsequently released as the Demos EP in June of that year. Shortly after, they unveiled their summery single "Seventeen," featuring a fully-realized band arrangement. The song gained significant attention after being featured in a commercial for an online marketplace in early 2016. "Seventeen" garnered millions of streams and attracted the interest of New York City label 300 Entertainment, distributed by Atlantic Records. The label officially released the track for digital download in mid-2016.
Sjowgren continued their musical endeavors with the single "Now & Then," which achieved success on streaming charts in early 2017. In 2018, the band returned with two stand-alone tracks, "Beginners" and "Better Off." They resurfaced in 2020, independently releasing the EP win'20.
Although Sjowgren's name may evoke a Scandinavian influence and their sound could be reminiscent of Nordic pop, the trio's indie pop style incorporates a retro-soul edge, primarily characterized by the unaffected alto vocals of their lead vocalist.
As a musical project, Sjowgren places a greater emphasis on creativity rather than pursuing widespread fame. They release their content through their own label, Long Time Friend Discount, and prefer to remain primarily behind the scenes, focusing on songwriting, production, and artistic direction.

No cursive in my living room
I ain't dead yet
It's a long winding road
And I been following it quite well
It's like I'm artificial
These days moderation gets you caught in a storm
We levitate but then the grass ain't quite so strong
Before the flip phone hit
And a generation lost its shit
I know
I'm about to lose control
But another might just soothe my soul
Yeah one more just to soothe the soul
Cause these days are out of control
Now i'm faced up with my demons
Placing counterfeit bets
Nother cold wedding season
I'm having midnight sweats
Oh yeah I know I'm losing control
But everyone is artificial
These days moderation gets you caught in a storm
We levitate but then the grass ain't quite so strong
Oh how did they do it
Before the flip phone hit
And a generation lost it's shit
I know I'm about to lose control
Yeah one more just to soothe my soul
I know
I'm about to lose control
But another might just soothe my soul
Yeah one more just to soothe the soul
Cause these days are out of control
These days are outta control
These days are outta control
These days are outta control
The lyrics to sjowgren’s “Flip Phones” express a feeling of detachment and loss of control in today’s modern society. The first few lines describe the singer losing their opinions in a “vanity sweat,” highlighting the superficiality and shallowness of modern life. The lack of cursive in the living room adds to the sense of artificiality while recognizing that the singer is still alive – “I ain’t dead yet.” The next lines describe a long, winding road that the singer has been following, but they still feel “artificial” in today’s society where moderation leads to being caught in a storm. The line “we levitate but then the grass ain’t quite so strong” juxtaposes the sense of floating above life’s problems with a recognition that even the best things have their downsides. The chorus asks how people coped before the advent of flip phones, but acknowledges that “a generation lost its shit” upon their introduction.
The second verse continues the themes of losing control and artificiality. The singer faces their demons and places counterfeit bets, perhaps indicating a sense of gambling or risk-taking that is not based in reality. The reference to cold wedding season and midnight sweats adds to a sense of disillusionment and dissatisfaction with modern life. The use of the term “everyone” conveys a sense of universality – that the feeling of artificiality and loss of control is pervasive in society. The chorus repeats the same themes, with the singer recognizing that they are about to lose control and looking for one more thing to soothe their soul. The repetition of the line “these days are out of control” emphasizes the chaos and lack of direction in modern life.
