Folding Chair
spektor regina Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come and open up your folding chair next to me
My feet are buried in the sand and there's a breeze
There's a shadow, you can't see my eyes
And the sea is just a wetter version of the skies

Let's get a silver bullet trailer and have a baby boy
I'll safety-pin his clothes all cool and you'll graffiti up his toys
I've got a perfect body, though sometimes I forget
I've got a perfect body cause my eyelashes catch my sweat
Yes, they do, they do

Now I've been sitting on this abandoned beach for years
Waiting for the salty water to cover up my ears
But every time the tide come in to take me home
I get scared, and I'm sitting here alone
Dreaming of the dolphin song

Maybe one day you will understand
I don't want nothing from you but to sweetly hold your hand
Till that day just please don't be so down
Don't make frowns, you silly clown

Just come and open up your folding chair next to me
My feet are buried in the sand and there's a breeze
There's a shadow, you can't see my eyes
And the waves are just a frothier version of the skies

There's a shadow, you can't see my eyes
There's a shadow, you can't see my eyes, eyes

Overall Meaning

In "Folding Chair," Regina Spektor describes a lazy day at the beach with her lover. She invites him to come and sit next to her in a folding chair with feet buried in the sand and enjoy the gentle coastal breeze as the waves roll by. She imagines a future with him, where they live in a silver bullet trailer and have a baby boy. They'll dress him in cool-look clothes and graffiti his toys. Regina loves her body, and sometimes she forgets how perfect it is, but her mascara catches her sweat.

However, despite the calm and pleasurable surroundings, Regina reveals a darker side of her thoughts. She admits to waiting on this deserted beach for years, hoping for the salty water to cover up her ears and take her home. Yet, every time the tide comes in, she gets scared and remains alone, only wishing for the dolphin song to comfort her. She depends on her lover's warm company and gentle touch. Regina implores him to stop being so down and to come and sit with her because in the end, time is too precious to waste over unimportant things.

"Folding Chair" is a poignant and catchy song that reflects on the various facets of human emotions. It's a mix of beauty, longing, pain, and love. Regina Spektor's quirky and unique voice adds a charming element to the song, which is sure to linger in one's head after hearing it for the first time.

This has got to be one of her best concerts she's ever done. She sings so ridiculously well that even autotune couldn't improve her voice.

Right! I came here to write that!

I know it may seem frivolous, but the lyrics that really caught me when I heard this song was, "I've hot a perfect body, but sometimes I forget. I've got a perfect body cause my eyelashes catch my sweat." I often feel down on myself for stupid reasons, like not having a Sports Illustrated cover girl type body, but we should just be grateful for having healthy, functioning bodies. We forget how amazing it is just to be alive and well.

@Se Bo 100% noticed that also.

Couldn't agree more. Did you notice they didn't show her face during making those sounds? No appropriate mimics of a pretty woman's face for marketing I guess.
