"The original recording was done in January 1990 at my Mum's place in Pollards Hill. They'd said they were going to start a group and make records in the 90's - such a stereotypically Saint Etienne thing to say. And so in January 1990 there they were. As far as I was concerned they were making a demo! Two songs in an afternoon. We didn't really have much time to think about it. I remember patiently trying to explain how it would never work. It's a 3/4 song, they wanted to do it in 4/4 - I didn't see it." (engineer Ian Catt, 2009).

"The idea was just to do covers and use rotating vocalists. We recorded 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'Kiss and Make Up' (later re-recorded with Donna Savage and released on the 2CD version of Foxbase Beta) on the same day. The idea was just to see if we could do something that worked." (Pete Wiggs, 2009).

Moira Lambert had her own band at the time, called "Faith Over Reason". They put out two EPs in 1990, "Billy Blue" and "Faith Over Reason" (the latter only on vinyl), then a compilation in 1991, "Eyes Wide Shut". Only beautiful music can strengthen the spirit. I grew up in Saint Etienne, the town from which the band takes its name, made famous by the epic story of its football team in the late 70's and early 80's, which I lived through. And this music evokes marvellously the romantic imagery of happy days.

I first heard this song playing 3 to 4 times a day on the radio back in September 1991 when I was 15 years of age & doing 3 weeks work experience. It was in the charts with "i'm too sexy for my shirt", "Everybody's free", "Peace in the valley", "Creed", "Jacky", "Live your life be free" and "Something's got me started" This song was the only song that never got on my nerves

If Neil Young could ever sound so good. As a 12 year old growing up in Bexley heath in 1990. I would not even have heard of this great man till my mid 20s. But they sure did it justice. One of the best tunes to come out the baggy period.

i fell in love with st etienne because of these vocals....fox base alpha one of my all time fav albums. Remember sitting in the middle of dam square with this blasting out back in early 90's
