I think this is him giving a nod to what started as a joke theory that got taken more seriously over time. H+A=M+J. Basically, reinterpreting the events at Harrenhal that it wasn't Ned or Brandon that Ashara fell for, but Howland Reed. Part of that theory also has Arthur's survival as well, but I am not quite sure how someone like him would be doing nothing for so long. Not to mention, unless he doesn't have Dayne coloring, one would think he would be real recognizable.

Also, they're the ones who told the story of the Knight of the Laughing tree, something Bran hadn't heard of. Why is this an important story to the Reeds, but not the Starks. Could it be because that's where their parents met? Meera is also roughly the same age as Robb and Jon.

Dude didn't have to rename the sword. It's entirely possible that both Dawn and Lightbringer are just translations of whatever its original name was. "Lightbringer" could be the name translated into the common tongue through a separate valyrian translation while "Dawn" was the translation through the old tongue into the common tongue. Same sword, same name, different languages.

Arthur and Ned basically having the same goals, protect Lyanna and the kid, and not being able to talk it out makes perfect thematic sense. What kills Arthur? Duty and honor. What kills Ned? Duty and honor. If these two inflexible men had been willing to compromise on their honor, they'd both be alive. Arthur could have let Ned run off with the true heir, letting Ned say it is his bastard son, and Ned could have not warned Cersei and basically the entire continent about his discovery of Punnet Squares.

I like to think that Arthur knew he and Ned were on the same side. And as you said, Rhaegar trusted Arthur with all his knowledge and obsession with Azhor Azhai. I think Arthur allowed Ned to defeat him, realizing in that moment that he was the bleeding star, and he allowed himself to die knowing that Ned would protect the baby like Rhaegar would want.

Rhaegar didn’t believe his child with Lyanna would be Azor Ahai. He thought the Aegon he had with Elia was the Prince that was Promised and that the child he had with Lyanna would be a girl- his Visenya.

I can’t imagine how he would have reacted had they all lived since he’s sort of dead set on his prophecies. I feel like the whole Lyanna and Rhaegar debacle is romanticised when I feel like it’s a lot darker. I mean in her final days she was confined like a prisoner in the tower of Joy. And since GRRM loves his irony I imagine she felt anything but Joy in that Tower.

So if Lyanna didn’t give him his Visenya he may have discarded her or found someone else to give him his Visenya. I feel like he’s a whole lot more than the ‘perfect prince’ everyone imagines him to be.

Yeah I completely agree that Rhaegar is way more fucked up then the perfect prince appearance the narrative pushes. Because do keep in mind, he just straight up abandoned his wife and kids. These 2 other kids who were supposedly extra important to his prophecy, he just up and left with no protection, and that's with him being the one who ends up escalating the situation to war. And let's also not forget that, whilst he was 27 years old, Lyanna was just 15. So the whole idea of "oh he didn't kidnap her, they were in love" just comes across even more creepy. He groomed and manipulated a 15 year old into being his wife, and abandoned his actual wife and kids just to get with a kid. And yeah, you've hit the nail on the head there, about Lyanna's time in the tower being anything but joyous. I doubt she felt much joy hearing that her running off with this man had gotten her father and brother killed and started a war. Not just that, but surely with how fierce she was, hearing that would've made her speak up, and confirm to the world that it "wasn't kidnapping". Yes, that probably wouldn't have stopped the war, but it's better then nothing, and surely Lyanna wouldn't feel ok with herself just sitting by as the world burned. The only way I can see her staying quiet is if Rhaegar either didn't tell her, or made her stay quiet. The fact that those kingsguard protecting the tower (who were undeniably acting on Rhaegar's orders) didn't let Ned in despite the fact that she was giving birth and needed support, says all you need to know about what kind of situation the tower of joy really was.

I really like the idea of Ned actually having a romance with Ashara. At the Tourney of Harrenhall, it's mentioned that Ashara danced with Jon Connington, Brandon Stark, Oberyn Martell, Barristan Selmy, and also Ned Stark. All of these guys at this point are extravagant, outgoing, badass warriors and knights of great renown, and there's quiet Ned. He definitely wasn't like the rest of these guys, and maybe Ashara realized that and got interested in him? It would be a great parallel with Catelyn Stark finding the good heart underneath Ned's hard exterior, and maybe Ashara actually got to see the good heart before anyone else did. In regards to Brandon, I hope that he didn't sleep with the girl that his brother fancied, because that's a major bro code violation in all Seven Kingdoms bro. If anything, I could picture his reaction to Ned being interested in a girl to be like how Robert Baratheon would have reacted: "Well, it's about damn time you little shithead!" If anything, it would serve to show how Ned was just as human as the rest of the characters in the story, and would also show how bittersweet Robert's Rebellion was- Ned and Ashara loved each other, but could never be together because of the world they lived in, and because of the choices others made. It's a perfect star-crossed lovers kind of thing.

On the note of Arthurian associations, the name "Tower of Joy" is most likely a nod to the Joyous Gard Castle in arthurian myth, a place which served as a refuge for Tristan and Yseult but also for Lancelot and Guinevere. A reason Ashara Dayne didn't die, the name, 'Ashera', means, 'she who walks on the sea', not, 'she who sinks into the sea', so it's likely Ashara didn't drown but walked away using the sea. 'Ashera' also seems to be a Sumerian mother goddess to many gods and goddesses, so Ashara might play a maternal role to the new wave of heroes in ASOIAF. EDIT Though there's also a really upsetting side to Ashara's name. It's very similar to the name meaning of Morgana, which means 'circling sea' or 'bright sea dweller'. Morgana as in Morgana Le Fay, who had an incestuous relationship with her brother, King Arthur, producing Mordred, who tore apart the realm (some people even use footage of Morgana from the Merlin show for Ashara in fan made music videos). Did Ashara Dayne have an incestuous relationship with Ser Arthur Dayne and that was the child? Even if Ashara didn't have a child by her brother, what if her child is someone who will sow chaos in the Seven Kingdoms? What if Young Griff, aka, Aegon Targaryen/Blackfyre is the child of Ashara Dayne, like Mordred seeking to conquer the land of his parents? Ashara also seems similar to the Asura, the Vedic rebellious beings who cause discord for the gods. Mind you, if George goes off of older myths, Morgana and Arthur were not incestuous and Mordred was considered one of Arthur's noblest men, even dying beside him in Arthur's last battle. Morgana was one of the most desired women of Arthurian lore, later myths have fan-coupling with her because she was so desired for pairing with other heroes. So maybe Ashara is based on that older, nobler aspect of Morgana, the kind that took Arthur to Avalon to be healed. Maybe Ashara will heal Jon in a similar way.

He used a sword made from the black stone he worshiped to kill his sister (Nissa Nissa?) as a blood sacrifice since she had kings blood!
This dark magic might have triggered the long night or the timing might be a coincidence. Either way, he had a magic sword and the dead are rising, threatening his newly established reign. Azor Ahai might not have been a great hero if this is true and just another mad king fighting something that was a threat to his power!
That seems like something George RR Martin would do, flipping our expectations, since he's know to hate the typical good vs evil trope. An evil King saving the world from the Others for selfish reasons? Yeah, the story of Azor Ahai ain't no tragic romantic tale, it's a story of a jealous younger brother killing his elder sister and anything else in his way to being the Emporer!

I highly believe the Dayne’s Sword Dawn is the true Lightbringer. Besides the idea that the sword Dawn was made from a star with mysterious power and possibly giving the same feeling like the legendary sword before, it could be the missing key to The new Azor Ahia, the burning light in a field of fog. could it be possible when Dany reaches Drone would she be the one to fight against the apocalypse or with the connection with The Starks, is Jon truly worthy? But out of all the swords of Westros, Dawn feels like the true Lightbringer.

Some of the best fanfics I have read are an AU where he survives and raises Jon/Aemon either in Winterfell posing as Neds bastard or hiding in Essos until he comes of age to return as Rhaegars son coming to take back Westeros.

I wonder if it’s possible that Arthur LET Ned kill him to save the life of Rhaegar’s son. He knew he would serve Robert, and would have to tell him about Jon, because honor is everything he’s about. Rhaegar wanted Dayne to protect his family, and Dayne had to protect them by willingly giving his life. It would really show how noble he was, right up to the very end!

I really hope we will get more about the Daynes before the story ends. The whole Tower of Joy situation is so mysterious and all we have is a fever dream... but there must be more to the story. I will never believe the Daynes naming their heir after Ned and not cursing the Starks routinely every morning if he killed Arthur, dishonoured Ashara, stole her baby bringing her to depair deep enough for her to kill herself... or that that they admited him at all after killing Arthur- take the sword back at the gate and tell him to f-off. But they still consider him honourable and Jon Snow is remembered at Starfall meaning they let them stay for a few days at least ...

Also, the Targs were not around during the 1st Long Night, so however that mas managed it was without dragons... If anyone was involved apart from the Starks and the North-dwellers, House Dayne would be the best bet? Stars are fire balls and they keep an ancient sword made from the heart of a fallen star (heart of a fire ball) and they keep it safe on an island at the other end of the continent and only allowing most skilled warrior to weald it. They stick to Dayne knights but it could be meant for the best knight in general who can play the part of the Last Hero? Fancy blade called Dawn and their house words are deemed spoilery... It would make sense for puzzle pieces to be scattered to keep them safe. And we do not know enough about them to know if they had any Long Night legends of their own...
And as much as Lyanna and Reg things seems fated (Ice and Fire) there's a lot of crossed paths between Starks and Daynes in a short span of time... Ned and/or Brandon with Ashara mistery thing, Arthur guarding Lyanna for a year, then Edric running into Arya... for houses so far away and with Daynes much more minor than Starks they seem to run into each other a lot.

Remember ned didn’t dump ashara if they dated. Brandon died in kings landing by aerys. Brandon was meant to marry catlyn Tully but since he died, ned had to marry catlyn in Brandon’s place, because he needed the vale man for the rebellion. So that’s why things broke of with him and ashara. If ned didn’t marry catlyn tully, he wouldn’t have enough forces for the rebellion and him Jon Aryn and Robert would have all died

Watching their fight I'm not convinced Arthur was ever trying to kill Ned, just Ned's men. My theory is that he let Howland Reed kill him thinking Howland had sustained enough damage to die from his wounds. So that Ned and Wylla would be the only ones to know of Lyanna and the baby.

A man as experienced as Arthur Dayne would have known that Howland was not dead when he turned his back to him and he really took his time with his final assault towards Ned.

When Mance had been manacled and starved and yet Jon was easily outdone by Mance, who barely even raised a sweat, lazily defeating Jon (who wasn't exactly a poor swordsman), Also Mance is constantly singing about Dorne... how would a wildling even know about Dorne? I think the Valeryans and the Dayne's are children of the Amethyst Empress/Nissa Nissa. The Bloodstone Emperor is Azor Ahai. I believe he killed Nissa Nissa to use her blood to bring the first dragons into the world. He was then cast out by his siblings and somehow ended up at the wall and married the Tiger Woman/Night's Queen and she used his seed to create White Walkers. He is the reason dragons and white walkers exist. I don't know exactly why he killed Nissa Nissa, it may have been that he needed her death and possibly the death of the child inside her. Yes he killed 2 dayne but bringing that sword back when he could of kept it means a lot. It's an irreplaceable heirloom. More men will be born and raised but there is only one of that sword. I honestly think the reason they fought at the tower was because Ned wanted to hide Jon as his bastard and the kings guard with his sister wanted Ned to put Jon on the throne. That’s what makes sense to me because Ned thinks about his sister and broken promises. And naming Jon his bastard undermines everything his real father worked towards so I could see his friends and supporters fighting Ned over this

@Alt Shift X I love how you took all the source material and neatly stitched everything together into a cohesive and coherent story which is something we all know David Benioff and D. B. Weiss failed miserably the last two or three seasons of GOT. At the very least I would love to know what GRRM would have to say about your reviews; we all think you're spot on.

I spent most of last year re-watching the entire series with closed-captions (taking screen prints), re-reading all the books and official online source material, and taking copious notes for the Season Eight final exam only to find out the Double Dees didn't using any of the study material because they made it all up. Granted GRRM hasn't finished the books yet but he's put out tons of back-story source material that a blind person wouldn't have a problem coming to a much different conclusion than what we received in the last two or three seasons; especially Season 8.

Everything you're talking about in this video I came across in my studies last year and was quite surprised to say the least that I wasted much of last year doing so. Fortunately I'm not alone because fans worldwide expressed their dismay for Season 8 especially with U.S. ratings going from about 95% for S8E1/2 to 50% in S8E6 which is the worst season for GOT.

The point questioning Arthur Dayne's loyalty to Aerys is interesting, but I can't help but feel they were at the Tower of Joy on royal orders.

The bulk of the Tower of Joy segment is Ned questioning their whereabouts, to which Ser Gerold answers that the "Kingsguard does not flee, then or now." Which basically answers the question of why they are there: they are guarding their King.

The fact that Arthur was with Rhaegar isn't very surprising. One, as you said yourself, Arthur was Rhaegars oldest friend. The other reason is that the Kingsguard are supposed to protect the whole Royal Family, not just the King. It's not too surprising that at a time of war, the most accomplished soldier is sent out to guard the Prince's wife and newborn child.

What if Rhaegar told Arthur Dayne that after Lyanna gave birth he would need to kill her by stabbing her through the heart with Dawn in order for lightbringer to be made via the strength and spirit and sacrifice of the woman he loved. And despite Arthur being super honorable, he was loyal to Rhaegar and committed to his mission, so he planned to go through with this. In real life, we go through troubling times and dark days, and during those times we look to people to help us get through. The prophecy of Azor Ahai speaks of the son being born amidst sacrifice. I believe Rhaegar instructed Arthur and the Kingsguard to fight to the death to enact this sacrifice, even if they both only wanted to protect Lyanna.

I feel like Ned Dayne was originally gonna be a big character after the original five year time jump, and he probably would’ve been one of the “second gen protagonists”.

I think a lot of the characters that were teased in ACOK and ASOS were gonna have a bigger role in the time jump, like Jeyne Poole, Edric Storm, and Ned, but because the five year jump didn’t happen, a lot of these characters probably ended up having their storylines change to continue the journeys of already established characters and follwing the new sub plots.

I don't feel like this gets discussed enough: George RR Martin has said Arthur Dayne and Barristan Selmy are equally good fighters although, in a duel Arthur would probably win because of Dawn.

So they are equally good (remember they will have practiced together many times, eg. I was so intrigued by Edric Dayne when we first see him and really hoped he would play an interesting role in the future of the world but I respect George more for it bc if the restraint he was able to show. Instead of potentially creating some unsatisfactory conclusions to the more important stories he allowed them to grow as needed.

Everytime I hear someone complain that the books are taking too long I have to point out something like this video: a single minor house with a history centuries long and all have threads out woven into the world. He's built himself the most immensely complex world to tell a story in, it shouldn't be a surprise that it takes an absurd amount of time and effort to pull it together.

I believe Ned might've talked with Ashara, found out about the Tower of Joy and Ashara sent a raven there telling Ser Arthur Dayne to flee or surrender or something and Ned rode down to the Tower of Joy, expecting Dayne to listen to his but instead of surrendering or fleeing to help them with this plan, he felt like he had to follow his orders from Rhaegar but he let Ned kill him in the end. Killing Neds friends while exposing himself to his attack, and Eddard Stark realized this, that he only focused on his friends so that he would be able to kill him. But Ned hesitated, until several of his friends was killed and was about to kill Howland Reed before he finally did it. They then returned to Starfall where... Well I have no idea what happened.

In my own opinion Ashara was both the Amythyst Emperess and the Maiden of Light, and thus she turned her back on the world and welcomed into the world the lion of night again. Regardless of whom this century's blood stone emperor may be "Cough Cough DARKSTAR Cough Coguh" it's really quite obvious, that GRRM is throwing A LOT of red herrings our way with Euron, sooo..Take my word for it, If Arthur Dane wanted to die to protect Jon Snow, whom Rhaegar believed will ultimately be the prince who was promised, then it makes sense for Jon to kill Darkstar to claim Dawn so His destiny as the TRUE Azor Ahai be fufilled! Jeez ASX csnt you see the obvious?

4:01 Common misconception, but Robert didn't start the rebellion, Jon Arryn did. It's called Robert's Rebellion because Robert had the best claim to the throne, seeing how he had a Targaryen grandmother, but Jon Arryn first raised his banners in defiance of Aerys II.'s orders to bring him the heads of Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon.

Robert had the best claim to the throne but not because of his grand mother because of his ancestor Orys Baratheon was the bastard brother of Aegon the Conquerer. I guess that is the why.

It was actually Littlefinger, he started the rumour that Lyanna Stark was kidnapped by Rahegar. Brandon Stark wasn’t as cool headed as Ned and Littlefinger knew that he’d do something as stupid as to go South and make demands of the Mad King!

I realise Arthur Dayne only "appears" a handful of times in memory, but with how idealised he is, I was hoping they would cast a really handsome man to play him in the show.
Or give him longer hair. I don't think we ever hear anything about his hair but some flowing locks fit the 'romantic warrior' sterotype that he embodies so much more. Look at Rhaegar for example. He has those flowing silver locks
