Gomenasai
t. A.T.u Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What I thought wasn't mine
In the light
Was one of a kind,
A precious pearl

When I wanted to cry
I couldn't cause I
Wasn't allowed

Gomen nasai for everything
Gomen nasai, I know I let you down
Gomen nasai till the end
I never needed a friend
Like I do now

What I thought wasn't
So innocent
Was a delicate doll
Of porcelain

When I wanted to call you
And ask you for help
I stopped myself

Gomen nasai for everything
Gomen nasai, I know I let you down
Gomen nasai till the end
I never needed a friend
Like I do now

What I thought was a dream
An illusion
Was as real as it seemed
A privilege

When I wanted to tell you
I made a mistake
I walked away

Gomen nasai, for everything
Gomen nasai, Gomen nasai,
I never needed a friend,
Like I do now

Gomen nasai, I let you down
Gomen nasai, Gomen nasai,
Gomen nasai till the end

I never needed a friend
Like I do now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to t.A.T.u's song "Gomenasai" convey a message of regret and apology for letting someone down. The singer reflects on their previous thoughts and perceptions, realizing that what they thought they had wasn't really theirs. The first verse describes a realization that something that they considered to be one of a kind and precious was not really theirs. The second verse describes the realization that something that they thought was innocent and delicate was actually fragile, like porcelain. In the third verse, the singer reflects on how what they thought was just a dream or an illusion was actually real and important. However, they were too afraid to admit their mistake and ask for help, so they walked away. The chorus repeats the phrase "Gomenasai," which means "I'm sorry" in Japanese, emphasizing the singer's regret and the weight of the situation.

Overall, the lyrics of "Gomenasai" describe the singer's realization of their mistakes, their guilt, and their longing for a friend to talk to. The use of Japanese words in the chorus adds to the emotive and foreign quality of the song, and the overall tone is melancholic and apologetic. An interesting aspect of the song is that it was written by a Swedish songwriter, and the Japanese phrases were added by the band's producer, who was Japanese. This highlights the global, border-crossing nature of the music industry and the potential for multicultural collaborations.

This song was made for the Japanese Fans. Where in 2003, at a LIVE music TV japanese show. They were the special guest to perform to end the show.. but at the last moment, their manager (or something, we dont really know the reason behind it) told them not to perform.. and so they decided to stay in the guest room area without performing... As this was all on LIVE.. the host had to joke about and change the schedule on the spot.. and the group that performed prior to the Tatu performance had to perform twice the same song~! ( how brave of them)
Well after this incident, it was a big news in Japan (japanese call it Dotakyan - cancel at the last minute)

Japanese Fans were angry at them, and their popularity went down dramastically in Japan.

So Tatu made this song "GOMENASAI" which means sorry in Japanese.

So people whose asking why they chose a japanese title, this is the reason!

+kou777kou Such a huge mistake, but I'm not surprised. While tatu were best in the very beginning, Ivan had them act terribly. They burned SO many bridges (mainly in Japan and the US) with their rude antics.
