I actually did put model trucks (as part of a lab) in a wind tunnel while still in school, and the results were as I described above.
@lostpony4885
Did you do any models with typical obstructions in the bed for example a cross-bed toolbox or cargo in the bed? I have experience that disagrees but, there was toolbox, cargo, significant rake (taller rear) and substantially underpowered engine for the configuration. So far i have found the obvious claim by truck manufacturer that covering the bed entirely helps and an analysis claiming that lowering the rear height at least 2 inches helps but no information for example on a partial cover of the bed or junk like a few crates etc might affect the dynamics to get a result different than the ideal empty bed. Any ideas might help me avoid making a silly model and playing with it in a poorly improvised wind tunnel to figure this out. Thanks!
@lostpony4885
Ah one more difference was a crawl-thru cab window that was always open i wonder if this impacts the dynamics inside the bed.

man, so this is what old school EE looks like rofl. history lesson!
@EngineeringExplained
Having your windows down will increase your drag, so it will negatively affect your fuel economy.
@cherrychevys
Bro... Your channel has come a long way since this. Congratulations
@KenJohn777
like your vids, very instructive. Can you make a video on the additional drag caused by having a matt or satin finish paint vs gloss and/or polished surface
@TomNouri
Tailgate down gains me about 1.8mpg over 200mile hwy driving intervals. I've measured it many times by topoff method and my mpg measurements don't lie. If ur presenting such a looped vortex in that there's enough resistance at base of the bed then the air should have no problem skimming over the top of it much of the same as tail up.

8ft bed???
@EngineeringExplained
@turtlewax3585 It may help slightly on the highway, but as you mentioned the added weight would neglect any benefit in the city.
