+cityofchamps66 I think that's honestly the problem. Critics were so hateful of him as an evil emperor that they failed to acknowledge how captivating he was in his role. It's like a self-defeating prophecy. Took me years as a pre-teen to realize this.

No, that's nonsense. He was nominated. If they didn't acknowledge how captivating he was he wouldn't have been nominated. It's just Benecio Del Torro was a little better.

He was the best part of the film. Was he silly at times? Sure. But so was the real Commodus. He was a crazy, insecure, inmature, madman who did most of what is in this film. Jaouqin was pretty fucking accurate.
