Suspend
the Machine in the Garden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Trapped in time
At the edge of reality
If I could stand
And look it in the eyes
And change back
To the way things were
Take everything away
So I am not suspended
Suspended above my life
Hovering around my fears
Feelings change
You've changed too

And I can't speak
And I can't know
And I'm not alone
And I fall

And I am far
And I am fear
And my tears flood
And I fall

And I can't see
And I can't leave
And I'm far beyond
And I fall

And I am near
And I am real

And my heart longs
And I am

Overall Meaning

Trapped in time, at the edge of reality, the singer of the Machine in the Garden's song "Suspend," feels suspended above their life, hovering around their fears. They long to change back to the way things were before, to take everything away so they are not trapped. However, they are powerless, and despite their feelings changing, they are unable to speak or know. They feel far, like they are falling, and tears flood their eyes. They long to see and leave, but they are far beyond. They are both near and real, but their heart longs for something they cannot have. The lyrics speak to staying stuck in a moment and feeling powerless to move past it.
