Iris
the goo-goo-dolls Lyrics

And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
And sooner or later it's over
I just don't wanna miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the Goo Goo Dolls' song "Iris" could be interpreted in several ways, but at the core, the song is about a desire for intimacy and connection that one finds difficult to attain. The singer states that he would give up anything, including his life or his identity, just to touch and be with his loved one because he feels that he'll never be closer to heaven than he is with them. This person seems to be the only one who understands him, as the world is "made to be broken," and he doesn't believe that anyone else could truly appreciate him.

The singer feels that he's living in the moment, that all he can taste and breathe is the essence of his loved one. He doesn't want to miss any opportunity to be with them, as he recognizes that these moments are fleeting. The singer acknowledges that life can be difficult at times, as evidenced by the fact that we "bleed just to know we're alive." However, he finds comfort in the fact that he's not alone, and that his loved one shares these moments with him.

Overall, "Iris" is a song about the search for intimate connections and the fear of losing them. It's a reminder to cherish the moments we have with loved ones and to be vulnerable, even though that vulnerability can be scary in a world that values toughness and resilience.

Fun fact: The band confirmed the story of the music video. The man suffers from terrible agoraphobia and social anxiety. He's very lonely and every day he looks through his telescope to watch people interact and takes down notes on how to socialize. He tries going out several times but is too scared and ends up changing his mind. He then has a breakdown from the isolation. Eventually he has enough and at the end he musters up the courage to leave his roof and goes out to see the world and try to make himself happy

Another fact: John Rzeznik was terribly depressed by that time, so he wasn't able to write or compose anything. And this song was a relief.

@portalgangadventures

Another fun fact. The Mandolin and epic guitar solo were performed by a session artist by the name of Time Pierce.

Reminds me of hunchback of Notre dame
