The BBs did not react to the microwaves because they are round. The sparks are caused by high electric fields, which peak at the corners and edges of metals. Since the BBs are round, the electric fields created were not strong enough to induce a discharge (i.e. a blue spark). If you look closely at the spoon, all of the blue sparks occur at the edges, which were fine enough to induce these high electric fields. Likewise, the crumbled up aluminum foil has many edges and sharp corners, which explains why they created nearly 100% of the sparks in the last experiment.
Look up lightning rods on top of buildings. Notice that they are very sharp for the same reason (but not too sharp, otherwise they will melt in the event of a lightening strike).

van der graaf generators have conducting balls that will arc high voltage between them. Rethink what you said.

@Thirty Three , I stand by what I said. Van der graaf generators induce very high electric fields. Try welding a nail on one of the conducting balls and you'll realize that every electric arc will occur at that nail.
I never said that conducting balls cannot create discharges. If the electric field is high enough, there will always be a discharge (case in point: lightning)
