Down
the shelters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shining light
Small city
Country girl looking all pretty
But she's lost

She looks up, she looks down, she looks left
But she can't seem to find
What she's looking for

Late at night, after dark,
Working hard at the bar
She's got something to prove

She sings her song ya
Everybody singing along ya
But she won't be here for long
No she wont be here, oh

She won't go down
To the same old place she's been
She won't go down
No she won't go down again

Shining light small city
Another night it's a pity
That she's lost

She looks up, she looks down, she looks left
But she can't seem to find
What she's looking for

Late at night after dark
Getting high at the park
She's got nothing to loose

She sings her song ya
Everybody singing along ya
She won't be here for long
No she won't be here, oh

She won't go down
To the same old place she's been
She won't go down
No she won't go down again
She won't go down
To the same old place she's been

She won't go down
No she won't go down again

Overall Meaning

These lyrics tell the story of a small-town country girl who is feeling lost and searching for something in her life. The repetition of "shining light" and "small city" reveals her environment, which may seem unremarkable but still has potential for something greater.

The girl is described as looking pretty, but she feels disconnected and unable to find what she is searching for. She looks up, down, and left, symbolizing her desperation to find fulfillment or purpose. It's as if she is trying to navigate through life, searching for something specific but unable to locate it.

Late at night, she works hard at a bar, perhaps using this as an outlet to prove herself and escape her feelings of being lost. Singing her song, she may find temporary solace as others join in, showing that she is not alone in her struggle. But despite this temporary connection, she knows deep down that she won't be in this place for long; she is determined to move on from her current situation.

The lyrics also mention her getting high in the park, indicating her attempt to escape her reality through substance use. With nothing to lose, she seeks some form of release or diversion, possibly indicating her frustration or disillusionment with her current circumstances.

Once again, the chorus reinforces her determination not to return to the familiar and stagnant place she's been before. She refuses to go down the same path again, suggesting a desire for growth, change, and a new direction in her life.

Overall, these lyrics depict a young woman in a small city who feels lost and disconnected from her surroundings. Despite her efforts to find meaning or happiness, she realizes that she needs to break free from her current situation and explore new opportunities to find what she's truly looking for.

I love every track on the album, but this one track transcends the rest. If there was any song that I would choose to display the immense talent of The Shelters, it would be Down. Absolutely fucking brilliant. I just can't get enough of that guitar riff. This song is a classic.

MikeVernon Productions JOSH IS MY STEPSON. APPRECIATE IT, ITS NORMAL FOR HIM TO PICK UP AN INSTRUMENT AND PLAY IT. DAVID BLACKMON IS A GOOD FRIEND, HE PLAYED GUITAR WITH JERRY REED IN THE 90'S WIDESPREAD PANIC. MIKE CAMPBELL IS HIS FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYER. HE THOUGHT JOSH WAS MIKE ON HYPNOTIC EYE, FORGOTTEN MAN. THIS IS HIS FAVORITE SONG. DAVID ISNT DOING WELL, HE CAN STILL PLAY THE SHIT OUT OF A FIDDLE! ☺ HOPE THEY CAN CONTINUE. I LOVE THE SHELTERS ON FACEBOOK HIS MOMS PAGE.

The first time I heard this song I was taking off from LA and the plane when up right as the music swelled and chorus started, ever since I do it because it's the perfect song for that rush as you get compressed with the g force
