Liar
the shelters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Among the things you stole from me
I'm becoming just like you
I can't trust the things I do
Ok I'm a liar
Tell me what to do
Hey I'm a liar
All deceptions that I hear
Come from your mouth in my ear
I deceived you too I guess
We should put this love to rest
Ok I'm a liar
Tell me what to do
Hey I'm a liar
Ya, and you're one too
Don't say its me
Admit its we
You'll be better off my dear
Go believe in someone else
There's nothing honest as a tear
Ok I'm a liar
Tell me what to do
Hey I'm a liar
Ya, and you're one too
Ok I'm a liar
Tell me what to do
Hey I'm a liar
Ya, and you're one too
The Shelters' song "Liar" is about deceit in a romantic relationship. The lyrics describe a situation where both partners have been lying to each other and stealing things from each other, leading to a lack of trust and an inability to distinguish truth from falsehood. The chorus repeatedly declares "Ok I'm a liar, tell me what to do, hey I'm a liar, ya and you're one too," suggesting a sense of resignation and even acceptance of the dishonesty between the two partners.
The second verse introduces the idea that deception is mutual, with "all deceptions" heard coming from the other partner's mouth. The song shifts focus from finger-pointing to a recognition that the relationship is doomed and it's time to move on. The final verse encourages the other partner to "admit it's we" rather than blaming one or the other, and to find someone else to believe in and trust.
The song's simple rock and roll instrumentation, catchy chorus, and relatable subject matter make it a standout track in The Shelters' discography.

The Shelters are SO underrated! Sadly when their benefactor Tom Petty passed away, Warner Brothers stopped promoting them altogether.
