Radio
the twenty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Outside America
Everybody's just waking up
Drinking coffee from a paper cup
To the sound of the radio

And there's a broke town girl
In the parking lot
Shaking off her dress with everything she's got
Last night she started dancing and she couldn't stop
Daylight came and it broke her heart

She's been up all night
Dream so big
In a town where dreams don't fit

Come on now people it's all we got
We feel it in our hearts for sure
Like a song that's been playing for all our lives
We know it's right, we heard it on the radio

Outside in America
There's a boy and there's a girl he loves
But he never really gave enough
So she couldn't take no more

She said she couldn't stay oh-oh
She had to walk away
'Cause she's never gonna get it
Never gonna get it
And she's never gonna live that way
He says "Oh my God, I feel like hell"

Come on now people it's all we got
We feel it in our hearts for sure
Like a song that's been playing for all our lives
We know it's right, we heard it on the radio

And its all these moments that
Start all the fires that
Make all these moments burn bright
So how can all this be right

Come on now people it's all we got
I feel it in my heart for sure
Like a song that's been playing for all our lives
We know it's right
We heard it on the radio

Oh-oh

We know it's right
'Cause we heard it on the radio

We know it's right
We heard it on the radio

Overall Meaning

The song "Radio" by the band Twenty One Pilots is a song that speaks to the power of music and the radio in people's lives. The lyrics describe two stories: one about a girl who spent the night dancing and dreaming big, only to have her heart broken by the cold light of day, and one about a boy and a girl whose relationship ended because he never gave enough. Despite this, the chorus talks about how music and the radio are what people have, and how they feel it in their hearts for sure. The song suggests that music has the power to bring people together and make them feel like they're not alone, even in difficult times.

The song's first verse describes a scene outside of America, where people are waking up and drinking coffee from paper cups while listening to the radio. The second verse describes a boy and a girl whose relationship ended because he never gave enough, causing her to leave. The chorus mentions how people feel the power of music in their hearts, like a song that's been playing for their entire life, and how they know it's right because they heard it on the radio. The final verse presents a question: how can everything be right when we have moments that start fires in us and make us burn bright? The song's overall message is that music has the power to bring people together and help them through life's difficulties.

Lyrics:

I ponder of something great
My lungs will fill and then deflate
They fill with fire, exhale desire
I know it's dire my time today

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

Sometimes quiet is violent
I find it hard to hide it
My pride is no longer inside
It's on my sleeve
My skin will scream reminding me of
Who I killed inside my dream
I hate this car that I'm driving
There's no hiding for me
I'm forced to deal with what I feel
There is no distraction to mask what is real
I could pull the steering wheel

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

I ponder of something terrifying
'Cause this time there's no sound to hide behind
I find over the course of our human existence
One thing consists of consistence
And it's that we're all battling fear
Oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here
Oh my, too deep, please stop thinking
I liked it better when my car had sound

There are things we can do
But from the things that work there are only two
And from the two that we choose to do
Peace will win and fear will lose
It is faith and there's sleep
We need to pick one please because
Faith is to be awake
And to be awake is for us to think
And for us to think is to be alive
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to think

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit
And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit

I ponder of something great
My lungs will fill and then deflate
They fill with fire, exhale desire
I know it's dire my time today

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

The best thing I’ve done this 2023 as a 60yo was discovering Twenty One Pilots. Yeah, OK, I’m a bit slow, but hey, it’s never too late. Blown away by the lyrics and musical talent that is like no other. My Car Radio is on maximum!

@HighDuck404

damn... grandpa able to sniff good music with his experience

Dude....I'm in the exact same boat. These guys strike a chord with me that I cannot explain. I started with Ride and The Hype.....and I am adding songs to my playlist almost every day. Better late than never!

@@whateverittakes5580 👍Agreed! They are just so unique. That, I think, is the attraction for me👏👏👏
