Echoes of Silence
the weeknd Lyrics

Talk to me baby
Tell me what you're feeling
You say you don't need to go
Don't you pretend you didn't know

How all of this would end up
Girl, I saw it in your eyes
And baby I can read your mind
And expectations were not in sight

You knew that talking dirty to me
On the phone would get me here
'Cause we both wanted to do this
But I could tell that you were scared
'Cause you thought there was more to us
But you knew how this would end
It's gonna end how you expected girl
You're such a masochist and I ask why
And you reply

I like the thrill
Nothing's gonna make me feel this real
So baby don't go home
I don't wanna spend tonight alone

Baby please
Would you end your night with me
Don't you leave me all behind
Don't you leave my little life
Don't you leave my little life
Ooh

No, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no

No, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no

No, no, no, no, no
Ooh, ooh

Overall Meaning

In "Echoes of Silence," The Weeknd tells the story of a complicated relationship where both parties know it's coming to an end but can't resist the temptation to be together one last time. The song starts with a plea from the singer asking their partner to confide in them and be honest about their feelings. The singer already knows that the relationship has run its course, but their partner is still in denial.

The second verse reveals that the couple had been engaging in phone sex, and although they both wanted to do it, the partner was scared because they believed there was more to their relationship than this physical connection. The singer acknowledges that their partner knew the relationship would end this way, but they couldn't resist the temptation. The partner is revealed to be a masochist and enjoys the thrill of the moment, knowing their actions will lead to heartbreak.

The chorus further emphasizes the partner's willingness to stay because they enjoy the feeling of being with the singer. Still, the singer recognizes that this situation cannot continue forever and pleads with their partner not to leave them behind at the end of the night. Overall, "Echoes of Silence" is a melancholic yet captivating portrayal of the end of a passionate but ultimately doomed relationship.

@TheVanillaWood

I’m a fan of Weeknd throughout every era. Though I’ve been a fan since House of Balloons, Echoes, and Thursday. Most people would know those as the compiled album Trilogy (and if you didn’t know that Trilogy was made up of those 3 mixtapes, well now you know!). But anyway, the older stuff will always 100% have a place in my heart. He was in a darker place then when he made this, and so was I, so that’s why I hold his older stuff in such high regards, as it got me through some stuff.

His newer stuff, I like, and I love. But nothing will ever make me feel like how Trilogy did. It was just something else. It’s linked to an era of both darkness and happiness for me, but I love it and I’m glad he still shows love for his older stuff like this and Kiss Land. It really shows that he’s still grounded and hasn’t forgotten where he came from.

He was right when he said in Rolling Stone, “I’ll be different, I think I’ll be different, I hope I’m not different, And I hope you still listen”. He was different since then for sure, but of course, I still listened.

Weeknd is def one of my top artists not just for his innate enigmatic presence, and puzzling ways, or even his immense talent in the music industry, but because he really does care about his fans. That’s why it’s always gonna be XO forever.

I’m not an XO gatekeeper like some of the people who say “only true fans listened since Trilogy, that’s just downright stupid. I hope some of the newer fans listen to this and maybe get curious enough to go back and listen to his older discography. Trilogy is dark, sensual, and intimate, and it cuts deep. Kiss Land is so cinematic and visceral in a way, but both have a way of making you feel like you’re in a dreamy haze, floating on top of clouds.

Enjoy this. xo
