@7kole4 eh, some of his songs now may cover some of those darker themes...but it lacks that ethereal "soulfulness" that was such a huge part of his authenticity as an artist. His songs were narratives. Each song on the Trilogy album resonated with the CD's titles (House of Balloons, Thursday, or Echoes of Silence). Some of the beats/melody (I'm not really keen on music jargon) in his new material, like track 5 of Beauty Behind the Madness, have strong, mainstream hip-hop influences. I don't care about an artist staying on the same note in every album. That's not what I'm saying...it's important for an artist to always redefine themselves in their craft and experiment. I just think his new album isn't as strong as the Trilogy. Usually when an artist becomes mainstream, their crossover album won't be at the same level as their underground album. You're appealing to a larger audience, so yeah, his album now is for mass appeal. Not to say that every artist do this, but most do.

Thursday is so underrated, I think it's deeper than people think it is. I still remember how much I sobbed when I first listened to it. It took me weeks for me to listen to it without crying. I consider it to be in the same league as his depressing songs (Echoes of Silence, Rolling Stone, Valerie, Wicked Games) his soft miserable voice and the beat are mainly what made me so emotional. Thursday is not a day, its a mind state, the various swings of depression a person goes through, when he commits the worst possible sin, just to feed is uncontrollable addiction. Its like running away from home from all the abuse only to end up in a crack house with a needle in your vein while a beast takes advantage and all hope you ever had, away from you. Thursday is the moment from where the effect of the drug starts to wear off and the craving starts kicking in, to the point where the drug again takes over and controls your mind and body,like all sensations the orgasm is limited, than the process is repeated.

Nah, this song is about a girl that is so emotionally connected to him and offers him her body, offers him all of her. But her love and obsession with him is not reciprocated. She is his "Thursday" girl. "just wait on Thursday, baby only." "Are you feeling when I'm free?" She is there solely to fulfill his needs on Thursday. She gets beautiful for him on Thursdays and wants more, want all of him...but that will never occur. So she lives for Thursdays now, his presence and approval gives her life meaning, and the rest of the week is just a blurry and frantic wait until Thursday arrives yet again...until he eventually grows tired of her and moves on. And that is when her life loses meaning. A common theme in the trilogy is dark love and its toxic, addictive effects...and the helplessness and loss of self worth that comes from the withdrawal, whether it be drug or person. The commentor Nomuna Batbayar is absolutely right. House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence (the REAL Weeknd) had depth and created a painfully twisted yet beautiful account of Abel's interactions with the 3 girls of each mixtape. In HoB, the unnamed woman is a good girl that the Weeknd hooks on his drugs and his love; Thursday has Valerie that's fallen for Abel so hard that the one day out of the week she gets to see him is the best time of her life and every other day she's an absolute wreck; Echoes of Silence is a whole new layer of fucked up shit with gangbang initiations into the XO crew and twisted dark love. (Note it's possible it's 3 mixtapes to show the relationship between Abel and the SAME girl but either way)
At the end of the day the stories and the lyrical power that was used to create those stories is simply missing from Abel's new music and it's really sad. I hardly like to listen to him these days unless it's this old stuff and it bothers me that people are now obsessed with him but are only obsessed with his superficial pop crap...

I started listening to Abel after I heard him on Arianna Grande's song, "Love Me Harder". At first I thought TheWeeknd was a band but then I peeped it was only one dude, lol. So after that I looked up some of his old stuff and learned more about him. His first old song I listened to was Wicked Games and I fell in love. Now today I have an XO hoodie and plan on getting more (gotta rep), and still waiting to see him in concert (hopefully one day). Thursday is one of my favorite songs ofc and I listen to it every Thursday (cheesy I know). I wish I would've found him back then so I could've had a chance to hear him perform his old songs live, that would've been epic!!
