Authorities should be held accountable. I was in the heart of Lahaina as a tourist and we heard no sirens and saw no police patrolling the area telling people to leave. My husband and I even asked hotel staff when we should evacuate but I was told “let’s wait for the authorities”. The authorities failed the locals, the people of Lahaina. I can’t imagine being those parents who were at work. How terrified and helpless they must have felt knowing their kids were in a horrific situation but they couldn’t help them…they just had to pray and wait…
The relief when they finally found out that their best friends not only made it out, they also got all their kids out alive and physically unharmed..
That the two of them managed it with so many small children is nothing short of a miracle..

We visited Hawaii in May, and spent a few days in Maui. Maui is such a beautiful place that turtles love to stay. Lahaina is absolutely amazing, I can still remember the dock… people were sitting there, watching the sunset. And all these amazing scenes is gone, I can’t believe what happened.. Everyone is so nice there, and I sincerely hope they can survive from this disaster. I will definitely go back to Maui because it is a beautiful and meaningful place. God bless Maui❤

This is absolutely insane. I am so thankful we got to visit Maui last year, my first visit to Hawaii ever. We planned to go two years ago for our 35th anniversary but had to postpone because of the pandemic. We finally got to go last year and I described it as "God's backyard". That's how beautiful it was to me. I am from the California desert, so Maui was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I can't even imagine how a wildfire can spread that quickly. That's something I would expect here on the desert.

I am beyond shocked at this. Words can't express how sad this makes us.

As a resident of Kona for over 30 years our tsunami sirens are tested once a month! I believe that a lot of the powerlines were down and these sirens are run by electricity which is one of the reasons they were not going off! The surprise me because you would think in case of an emergency they would have another source to sound off the sirens, but they didn’t… right now it’s search and recovery ! Hundreds of people are still missing!

It's so sad there wasn't time to get the people warned in some areas and in other areas police and firemen and neighbors took it on themselves trying to reach as many as possible. As someone who has helped traumatized children, I would tell parents how the people the kids admire and love react to this event will effect how the kids process it. A long time of worry, faith, questions. The fear this family faced can be heard in the Dad's voice. His love for them and the area shines in his face. He's much to offer as a part of the rebuilding. The story of the fire has yet to be completely told. I pray any changes proposed can be implemented with sustainable funding or contracts. I pray those trying to capitalize on this tragedy are denied the opportunity. I pray for the people, mostly.

As someone who lives in rural South Australia and was a volunteer firey for 20 years a general rule of thumb if any fires are seen as a major threat to a town or towns a siren if one is available in at risk township is sounded to notify of imminent danger...definitely going to be alot of changes and improvements coming out of this blaze

My Dad & step Mom went through the Paradise CA fire and now Maui as well. The only warning they got was waking up to smoke as many didn’t receive the emergency texts. They laud their emergency systems but it was nowhere to be found. No sirens, bullhorns or emergency services. Then they told people to evacuate bottlenecking hundreds of people who got stuck for hours. Thank the Lord the same thing didn’t happen in the Paradise fire where people were burned alive in their vehicles while evacuating.

This reminds me of that big Australian wildfire that happened only a few years earlier. This sort of thing is absolutely gut wrenching as nobody could defend their homes against a natural disaster of this kind of magnitude.

Nothing like this should be possible now. With how connected we supposedly are, with all the tech we have, “innovations” in fire safety and fighting techniques. My mind cannot process how something of this magnitude could take place. Rest in Peace to those whom we’ve lost. We must help our fellow American’s recover from this in whatever way possible! Or all those hills on the way from Wailuku area up towards and through Lahaina side. The dry years where big fireworks weren’t allowed around the holidays. This is a very serious problem. I hope they get the necessary help they need. The police, fire service and media could've done a better job but I guess they didn't have the resources/speed to get it done. Prayers to those affected.

The one thing I noticed right away when the news started to come in that there was a fire in Maui, the first thing I noticed was the lack of flashing lights. I didn't see one fire truck or police car in any of the early footage. It is extremely suspicious to see no first responders on the streets helping people escape.

Hawaii already barely belongs to it's native people because of the tourism industry so seeing these fires makes me more angry and heartbroken that they are losing more of their already small land :/ Praying for all the lives lost and the ones still trying to hang on<3

I just listened to a talk radio show 12:45 AM 8/15/23 and multiple callers from Maui said the emergency alarm (that is tested monthly) never went off and that the electrical fires were extremely prevalent. Every caller also indicated that the National Guard STILL hasn't showed up yet.

PG&E in San Francisco bay area got sued for the same reason. Now, they instituted a policy of shutting down electrical grids in areas with a high chance of wildfires ahead of forecasted high winds, hot weather and low humidity. Condolence to all the families affected by this tragedy. Lots of homes and lives lost.
