Eh, I think a story is just as important if not a bit more than the visuals. Both are important but a good story lays the foundation. An animated movie can have great animation and visuals but having a boring and unengaging story. Visuals are certainly something that can enhance a story but they can only enhance what's already there. Miyazaki balances great visual with a good but simple story as well. The point I'm trying to make is that story, especially a well structured one, can lay the firm and strong foundation for great visuals to enhance the whole experience as well. After all, Into The Spider-Verse's animation and story working together seamlessly is what made it so amazing to begin with.

This reminds me of 2 of my favorite quotes about animation that have always inspired me as an animation student which are:

"Animation, is both technique and story together, that's why I love animation. In other words, you have to find the style that tells your story with impact."

- Ralph Bakshi

AND

"Animation is basically not so much a technical implement as the expression of the spirit behind it. To see that spirit goes into your shooting must be your overriding ambition. "

- Lotte Reiniger

I actually found that quote at the end of Hazbin Hotel. By the way Any-Mation, you should really check out Hazbin Hotel by Vivziepop. The animation is so fluid and expressive and the humor is deliciously dark, with an Invader Zim inspired art style. It really pushed the bar when it comes to independent animation and there's so many little details that you got to rewatch it a few times to catch them all. Also, Helluva Boss is also great as well, from the same Vivziepop. DEFINITELY recommend those two.

I don't disagree@Ajith Thomas. But perhaps we are taking what @Jo-Kai Gon-Zo commented to the extreme. Perhaps he's just saying don't be so constrained by it. Not necessarily disregard story structure all together. Though, I could be wrong. Oftentimes times we here online find ourselves and others assuming what's not said a bit too much. 🤷🏼‍♂️

As I said, I don't disagree with you. And I appreciate the time and effort you took in providing your extensive and enjoyable reply ─ TBH, I fear much of what I'm saying may be simply redundant. Yet I still would like to add to @Any-Mation's reply about writing a book. . .conversely why not just create a beautiful stand-alone painting?

We all want to see a good story with beautiful animation. And one thing that has been reinforced by this video essay, is that it takes more than just two-dimensional thinking when drawing most animation frames in order to bring that story to its fullest potential.

Much like what you were saying, if the animated film (or any film), has beautiful imagery, but struggles with the story elements, then sadly, the imagery itself is also somewhat diminished as a result.

Addendum: I was quite inspired by the concept noted in the video essay about the appreciation, and more importantly the acknowledgement, of the intent behind each movement.

While Miyazaki's films are popular, I think the heart and vision that goes into them is criminally underrated.

Any-mation

His hard work definitely shows and I think people are starting to become more aware of it

Whenever my life gets too stressful i have trouble sleeping. Then i put on Miyazaki and it lightens my soul, Miyazaki isn't just a movie maker, he's a healer, his work will be loved for so many generations.

Drunk Geek

Yes I totally agree with you 🥺❤️

This is very true. Combine that with the amazing music by Joe Hisaishi. Just the music can put me out of a depressive, downward thought spiral and a film by Miyazaki will certainly do so. These pieces of art are healing.

Sammy WildFlower

Wow you worded that so perfectly. He is a healer ❤️
