The lyrics of "Gulp It Down" by toddle convey a contemplation about the power and consequences of words. The first stanza expresses the fear that speaking certain words will bring an end to everything, emphasizing the weight and finality of language. The singer decides to keep their thoughts to themselves, allowing their emotions to remain internalized. They let go of hatred and regret, symbolically returning them to the earth.
The second stanza reflects on the idea that uttering certain words can bring about new beginnings. However, the singer still chooses to keep their thoughts to themselves, maintaining control over their emotions. They decide to let go of sadness and loneliness, allowing these feelings to flow away like a river.
In the following lines, the lyrics describe being in a long tunnel where messages written on the walls are observed and shouted at. The sound rebounds and eventually transforms into ringing in the ears, suggesting the impact and reverberation of spoken words. The singer reiterates their decision to return hatred and regret to the earth. Along a long river, there is a bend where remaining words catch like garbage. This implies that certain words stick around and linger, possibly causing negativity or regret. The final line questions whether this cycle of darkness and continuation will persist eternally.
Overall, the lyrics of "Gulp It Down" invite listeners to reflect on the power of words, the consequences of their expression, and the importance of choosing what to articulate and what to keep inside.
