Overall Meaning

The lyrics of tricot's song "POOL" are a mix of abstract and concrete images, creating a dreamlike world that is both beautiful and somewhat unsettling. The opening lines "Kantan butta ketsumatsu wa muchi Omoi kitai no kongōbutsu wa jōri" can be translated to "The simple but harsh ending is heavy, the diamond of expectation is polished." The reference to a diamond suggests that the expectation in question is valuable, but the weight and harshness of the ending implies that it also carries a sense of disappointment or possibly even betrayal.

The next lines, "Nankaida to itte ite mo saezuri / A a kikoenai ya" mean "Even if I say it's normal, I can't hear the chirping." The image of a bird chirping is a common motif in Japanese poetry, often symbolizing the beauty and fragility of life. Here, however, the fact that the singer can't hear the bird's song suggests a loss of connection to the natural world and to the joy that can be found within it.

Throughout the song, there are repeated references to water, whether it's the "pool" of the title or the images of a dry throat ("Kōra de uruosu nodo wa mata sugu kawaki o") and a bath ("Dōzo nurumayu nite kaze o hikaremasenu yō ni"). These images could be interpreted in a variety of ways: as symbols of cleansing or purification, as representations of the powerful but unpredictable forces of nature, or as reflections of the singer's own emotional state.

Overall, "POOL" is a complex and evocative piece of art that leaves plenty of room for interpretation and introspection.

This was recommended by 5 albums to expand your taste in music. Best recommendation I've followed in awhile. I'm going to go through their old albums on spotify this weekend.

@BirdUpFR

Oh glad to see more people appreciating this band. If you find yourself nearly as enamoured with the sound as I was I'd recommend a Math Rock binge, namely Toe, Elephant Gym, TTNG, Delta Sleep, and covet.

@cranburrey

Thanks to this band, I started getting interested in Math Rock. Cool and yet such an underrated genre...

@@BirdUpFR Thanks for the rec unfortunately, the sound for desktop stopped working not long after I commented and I can't figure out why :( Hopefully your bands are on spotify and I can play 'em somewhere else.

I was very privileged to catch these girls live in a tiny tiny club in London two nights ago. They are the best live act I've seen in a very long time. So many bands can sound great in the studio but a bit all over the place live. In a grimy little basement, they played with every bit as much precision, detail, groove, and beautiful harmony as is on show here, but with even more energy and joy. Simply awesome.

@jafalk1022

Basement shows are the most rewarding to play

@glenncornett9260

Wish I had seen that; sounds superb.

@Ephrones

Can wholeheartedly agree. Saw them in Nuremberg in a venue with maybe 50 guests, only 10 of which where fans (or even knew the band). Still, one of the best live events I’ve ever been to.
