Tenjō no shimi wa

Fukuranda shimi o

Boku o Waraunara waraeyo

Kimi ga hoshīmono to

Sa a ima boku wa jiyū-sa

Kimi ga hoshi ga tteita

Ima no boku ni machigainaku kimi wa katenai
Machigainaku dare mo katenai

Tenjō no shimi wa aru asa nakuna tteta

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tricot's "Swimmer" reflect on the inner turmoil of the singer, who is struggling to reconcile their desires and aspirations with reality. The opening lines "Tenjō no shimi wa / asa ni araware yoru ni kieru" evoke a sense of fleetingness and impermanence - the stains on the ceiling come and go with the changing of the day and night. This could be seen as a metaphor for the singer's fleeting moments of inspiration and hope, which are soon overshadowed by doubt and anxiety.

The second verse, "Kimi ga hoshīmono to / boku ga te ni iretai mono wa / itsumo chigatte ita" further explores the theme of conflicting desires. The singer feels that what they want is always different from what others want from them, but it is not clear whether this refers to a specific person or society at large. The chorus provides a sense of release and determination, as the singer urges themselves and others to laugh in the face of adversity ("Boku o Waraunara waraeyo / kimi ni wa wakaru mai-sa").

The final verse, "Kimi ga hoshi ga tteita / mono ni wa mō nani no kachi mo nai na / Boku wa warau yo / kimi nanka yori jōzu ni / ikite yuku / Ima no boku ni machigainaku kimi wa katenai / Machigainaku dare mo katenai" seems to encapsulate the message of the song. The singer realizes that nothing has inherent value or importance, including their own dreams and aspirations. However, instead of despairing, they choose to laugh and live more skillfully than those who are still clinging to illusions. The closing line, "Tenjō no shimi wa aru asa nakuna tteta" suggests that the singer has made peace with their imperfections and is ready to face the day ahead.
