Wash Away

I loved her but I'll never see her again
Clouds raise their heads in the morning
the way I once walked on by her
But now she's gone and I'll never raise my face again
White horses dragged my lover from me
the clouds rushed in and drowned my sorrow with the rain
My friends try to lift me
they understand how I'm feeling
but the truth holds me down
she came and went with the rain
White horses dragged my lover from me
The clouds rushed in and drowned my sorrow...
with the rain
Now always the storms come...
Raindrops run down my windows
All that's left is her picture
but someday it to will
wash away...
wash away...
I watched her walk away,
with the rain
The lyrics of TSOL's "Wash Away" are a poetic meditation on lost love and the pain of letting go. Right from the first line, the imagery of sad memories being brought on by the gathering rain sets a melancholy tone that carries through the entirety of the song. The singer acknowledges that he loved her, but he'll never see her again. The clouds that once were just part of the landscape where he walked by her now serve as a reminder of what was lost.
As the lyrics continue, the darkness of the loss becomes even more profound. The image of white horses dragging his lover away carries a sense of finality, as though there is no going back. The clouds rush in to drown his sorrow with the rain, suggesting that the only way to move forward is to allow the storm to take over. Even with the support of his friends, the singer acknowledges that the truth holds him down, showing that some losses cannot be eased by the comfort of others.
The final stanza is perhaps the saddest, as the singer speaks of how the storms now come always. Raindrops run down his windows, and all that's left of her is a picture that he knows will eventually wash away too. Watching her walk away with the rain, the singer seems to understand that for him, the storm may never fully pass.
Overall, "Wash Away" is a strikingly poignant song about the end of a relationship and the ways in which the pain of loss can linger. It's a testament to the power of lyrics that can convey complex emotions with just a few carefully crafted phrases.

One of Jack Lloyd Grisham's finest moments as a young song writer. Had the honor of working for them doing merch for a couple years when they first reformed in the early 2000s. Jack is coolest fucking guy ever as long as you are not strung out, spun out or poured out, and in one of our talks I mentioned their dark goth-punk stuff: Wash Away, The Triangle, 80 Times, Weathered Statues EP we're by far my favorite, because it is so unique. Jack told me it was the work he was the most proud of because it was his voice, it set them apart from every other band at Fender's, Cuckoo's, and Starlight. I was lucky enough to have Jack's nephew Rory as my best friend growing up, and Warped Tours, Java Lanes, The Vault and The Galaxy shows are still some of my most cherished memories. Rest in peace Rory G, you were called home much too soon my brother. Jack, keep being the beautiful pink maternity pants wearing sober derelict genius you are, and thanks for the memories.
