A Car
twenty one pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I ponder of something great
My lungs will fill and then deflate
They fill with fire, exhale desire
I know it's dire my time today

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

Sometimes quiet is violent
I find it hard to hide it
My pride is no longer inside
It's on my sleeve
My skin will scream reminding me of
Who I killed inside my dream
I hate this car that I'm driving
There's no hiding for me
I'm forced to deal with what I feel
There is no distraction to mask what is real
I could pull the steering wheel

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

I ponder of something terrifying
'Cause this time there's no sound to hide behind
I find over the course of our human existence
One thing consists of consistence
And it's that we're all battling fear
Oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here
Oh my, too deep, please stop thinking
I liked it better when my car had sound

There are things we can do
But from the things that work there are only two
And from the two that we choose to do
Peace will win and fear will lose
It is faith and there's sleep
We need to pick one please because
Faith is to be awake
And to be awake is for us to think
And for us to think is to be alive
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to think

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit
And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit in silence
And now I just sit

I ponder of something great
My lungs will fill and then deflate
They fill with fire, exhale desire
I know it's dire my time today

I have these thoughts, so often I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought

'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

Overall Meaning

"Car Radio" is a song by Twenty One Pilots that is about the loss of one's voice and the feeling of being disconnected from reality, represented by the stolen car radio. The opening lines of the song set the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer discusses the feeling of his lungs filling with fire before they deflate, representing the power of his thoughts but their inability to be expressed without his music. He is left with only silence and his thoughts, which become overwhelming. The loss of the car radio represents a loss of communication and power, leaving the singer feeling exposed and vulnerable.

The second verse goes deeper into the singer's mental state. He finds it hard to hide his emotions, and his pride is no longer inside of him, but rather on his sleeve. His skin will remind him of who he killed inside of his dream, representing guilt and trauma. He hates the car he's driving, and there is no distraction that can mask what he feels. He considers pulling the steering wheel, representing suicidal thoughts. The chorus is repeated as a reminder of the loss of the car radio and the ensuing silence.

The third verse moves towards an exploration of the human condition. The singer ponders something terrifying because there is no sound to hide behind. He reflects that, throughout human existence, one thing remains consistent: everyone is battling fear. The singer questions the purpose of humanity and whether or not there is a reason for our existence. He then argues that the only two things that can bring peace are faith and sleep. Faith represents awareness and thinking, while sleep represents distraction and avoidance.

He talks to us here. He says that his music is for us. He sings to let us know we need to try to think. And for us to think is to be alive.

I'm a 41 year old man who's battled depression and suicidal thoughts. The lyrics are heavy and very real to what depression is. But, when it hits when everyone is dancing and jumping up and down......that's freedom. So thank you, Twenty One Pilots for sharing this song with the world.
