Clear
twenty one pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wish that I had two faces
To prove which theory works
Yelling on a street corner
Or cleverly masking your words
I take my face off at the door
'Cause I don't know who they will take me for

I wonder if I tell 'em what I did last night
Whether or not I got caught, they just might
Wage war on you, therefore it's true
That I shot my general on my side of enemy lines

I'm the son of all I've done
I'm the son of all I've done
Impostor, been fostered
Then my new father drained my dirty blood
I'm the son of all I've done
I'm the son of all I've done
Impostor, been fostered
Then my new father drained my dirty blood, oh

I'm not trying to be lying to you
But it takes a clever guy to do what I do
It takes some chivalry and well-placed energy
To subliminally get yourself inside you
Introspection is the name of this session
Spread this infection, reflect it on the next one
The next one, the next one
And when we're done
We'll all have made something new under the sun
I'm not done, I'm not done yet, no
Kick me off the stage and take my microphone
Then you'll walk up to me and when you get close
I'll look you in the face and say, "where's your home?
Where're you going and why're you here?"
Have you asked these questions? Have you been sincere?
Wanna know what I believe? It's right here
Dig a little deeper and it's crystal clear

I'm the son of all I've done
I'm the son of all I've done
Impostor, been fostered
Then my new father drained my dirty blood
I'm the son of all I've done
I'm the son of all I've done
Impostor, been fostered
Then my new father drained my dirty blood, oh

I will tell you what I can
But your mind will take a stand
I sing of a greater love
Let me know when you've had enough
I will tell you what I can
But your mind will take a stand
I sing of a greater love
Let me know when you've had enough
I will tell you what I can
But your mind will take a stand

I sing of a greater love
Let me know when you've had enough

Overall Meaning

The song “Clear” by twenty one pilots is an intricate and well-crafted composition that talks about the duality of the self. The first verse deals with having two faces to show one's true identity while the second and third verses discuss the inner self and how it is affected by the outside world. The first line, "I wish that I had two faces to prove which theory works," shows the singer's desire to test theories about how people perceive him. He asks whether it's better to yell on a street corner or hide behind clever words. This is an issue he grapples with throughout the song, struggling to reconcile his inner self with the one he presents to others.

The second verse is about the fear of being caught for something. The singer wonders if he admits to what he did the previous night, whether it would change anything or not. But he believes that if he were to confess, it would start a war. He claims to have shot his general, representing an inner struggle, and then divides himself along enemy lines, showing how his actions have split him in two. The final verse is introspective. The singer invites the listener to ask difficult questions about their lives and then sings about a bigger picture.

Overall, “Clear” is a song that explores the themes of self-identity and the struggle to express oneself to others because of fear of rejection, fear of being misunderstood, and the fear of vulnerability.

Something interesting happens with this songs. (Not just clear, but the whole RaB album)
You don't find them, they find you when you need them.
Maybe they trying to make you feel... something.

@evelynbell2459

I get what you’re saying. Just a bit ago I wasn’t feeling okay and suddenly I was like “let’s listen to Ruby!” because it was the only tøp song I haven’t listened to yet and lo and behold I now listen to it on loop for hours straight. It makes me cry (tears of joy) every time because it tells me that their is still some sort of kindness in the world. Because it is one of the most kindest things to write a song for someone because you want them to feel loved.

Also want to say each RaB song is more different than the next and the interpretations more so.

@justanotherweirdo11

Definitely. I listen to them less than the others because YouTube keeps smiting all the RaB videos

@ThatJay283

omg this is so true. i dont find these songs when i dont need them. they find me and i use them. also you earned a sub :)

@macminator3000

my phone had broken and i was going out one day and i need music everywhere i go. i can't function without it. so i brought along my old iPod shuffle which had all my high school music on there, and of course all of Tyler's unreleased tracks were on there. it was dark and around 9pm, as soon as i got off the bus to my estate Clear started playing.

the vibe of that night was... strange, but in a good way. i love the night time. i feel so safe under the night sky. the warm streetlights, empty roads, and my craving for catharsis encouraged me to start running home. i didn't have a backpack on and minimal things in my pockets, so i though "why not?" so i ran home. gasping for breath, sweating balls, and i felt so alive.

i try not to listen to this song too much to preserve that special feeling i have towards it. i am so grateful for Tyler's music.

Я тоже так думаю.. Спасибо за лирик видео!
