The duo achieved breakthrough success with their fourth album, Blurryface (2015), which produced the successful singles "Stressed Out" and "Ride" and became the first album on which every track received at least a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. The release of the single "Heathens" also made the group the first alternative artist in history to have two concurrent top five singles in the Billboard Hot 100 and the third rock act in history to have two singles simultaneously chart in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, joining the Beatles and Elvis Presley.
The duo have released six studio albums in total, with the latest being Scaled and Icy, released on May 21, 2021. They are due to release their seventh studio album, Clancy, on May 17, 2024. They have also garnered ten No. 1 songs on the Alternative Songs chart, making them the artist with the fourth-most number-one songs on the chart, just below Linkin Park.

I hope that they choke on smoke 'cause I'm smoking them out the basement
This is not rap, this is not hip-hop
Just another attempt to make the voices stop
Rapping to prove nothing, just writing to say something
'Cause I wasn't the only one who wasn't rushing to say nothing
This doesn't mean I lost my dream
It's just right now I got a really crazy mind to clean
Gangsters don't cry
Therefore, therefore I'm
Mr. Misty-eyed, therefore I'm
Can you save, can you save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
Can you save, can you save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
For me, for me, uh
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
For me, for me, uh
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
Nah, I didn't understand a thing you said
If I didn't know better I'd guess you're all already dead
Mindless zombies walking around with a limp and a hunch
Saying stuff like, "You only live once"
You've got one time to figure it out
One time to twist, and one time to shout
One time to think and I say we start now
Sing it with me if you know what I'm talking about
Gangsters don't cry
Therefore, therefore I'm
Mr. Misty-eyed, therefore I'm
Can you save, can you save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
Can you save, can you save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
For me, for me, uh
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
For me, for me, uh
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
Death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit
Death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit
Can you save, can you save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
Can you save, can you save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
For me, for me, uh
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
For me, for me, uh
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
Can you save, can you save my, save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
Can you save, can you save my, save my
Can you save my heavy dirty soul?
The opening lines of "Heavy Dirty Soul" convey a sense of turmoil in the singer's mind. He describes an infestation within his thoughts, pushing him towards darkness. He hopes that by smoking out these negative thoughts, he can cleanse his mind. The singer also talks about writing lyrics to make the voices in his head stop, indicating that music is his outlet and therapy. He acknowledges that his words may not make sense to everyone but is writing with the goal of expressing himself. The lyrics also highlight the concept of the YOLO (You Only Live Once) culture, representing the singer's frustration with the idea of living life recklessly.
Throughout the song, the phrase "gangsters don't cry" is repeated, signifying the need to remain tough even during hard times. The chorus repeatedly asks if anyone can save the singer's heavy, dirty soul, indicating his desperation for an escape from his negative thoughts. The final lines "death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit" gives the impression that the singer gains inspiration from the inevitability of death, hinting at a darker side to his psyche.
