Shy Away
twenty one pilots Lyrics
When I get home
You better not be there, we're placing bets you won't
Shed your modesty
And the only thing to leave behind is your own skin
On the floor
Don't you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an "I love you" (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote, that's never heard
Don't you (sh)
When you get home
You barely recognize the pictures they put in a frame
'Cause you shed your modesty
Don't circle the track
Take what you have
And leave your skin on the floor
Don't you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an "I love you" (ooh, ooh)
That isn't words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote, that's never heard
When I get home
Boy, you better not be there, you're long gone
Shed your modesty
Don't circle the track
Just break the cycle in half
And leave your skin on the floor
Don't you shy away
Manifest a ceiling when you shy away
Searching for that feeling
Just like an "I love you" (ooh, ooh)
That isn't words (ooh, ooh)
Like a song he wrote
That's never heard
That's never heard
And I love you
There isn't words
Like a song he wrote
That's never heard
Don't you shy away

The song is based on a conversation frontman Tyler Joseph had with his younger brother where he walked him through his creative process for writing a song. It eventually turned into a letter of advice for his brother, encouraging him to pursue his dreams in the music industry. While Tyler did not specify which brother he was referring to in his interview, it is likely he was speaking about Jay Joseph since Jay dropped his first solo music, Drywall, one month prior to “Shy Away’s” release.
The track was revealed after multiple posters for the band’s Livestream Experience concert were found on the dmaorg.info website, similar to the way Trench was announced.
Tyler Joseph:
"'My brother said, ‘Hey, I just want you to show me, from the beginning, how you start a record. How do you start writing a song?’ So I had him over at the studio. A lot of times when I sit down to start, I’ll tap into my phone and I’ll have a bunch of voice memos of ideas that have hit me randomly. Sometimes it’s just a single word, sometimes it’s a melody. I started to build up the track from there, and it turned out that it was talking about wanting him to pursue his dream of chasing music. Most of my songs are very inward, but this is one of the few that I feel like the message is outward, coming from me. The only thing harder than figuring out what your purpose and identity is, is watching someone that you love trying to figure out theirs.'"

On BBC Radio 1’s Future Sounds—where the song received its global premiere—Tyler told Jack Saunders:
"'I’ve just been having a good time, playing some guitar for the first time, ever. I think nothing is more inspiring than learning a new instrument that I’ve never played before, specifically, the electric guitar and I had my younger brother over, he’s like “Hey, I wanna watch your process from start to finish, how do you start a song, how do you record a song, how to you write a song?” just kinda came up with the beginnings of the song, almost as a tutorial for him on how to lay out a song, how to start it, how to record it, how to produce it out.
Lyrically, it kinda turned out to talk about being an older brother and how the only tougher than trying to figure out what your own purpose is, is watching someone you love try to figure out their purpose.
This track means a lot to me for a few other reasons as well, the majority of this record was written and produced in my own studio. And specifically for Josh, […] this is the first time that he’s recorded drums all on his own, no engineer, no one helping him at all […]. We were working from across the country at the time.'"

I wanna gush for a minute about Twenty One Pilots and their attention to artistry. They aren't just making music, they're making pieces of visual art as well that vibrate colors and the colors are so palpable you can hear them in the music. Every time these guys have started a new era they made the vibe clear, and they made the color scheme just as clear.
The first video for Vessel was Holding Onto You. It was black-and-white, and used skeleton motifs and had felt very grounded and connected. The entire Vessel era was much of the same, with a huge emphasis placed on the group's newfound fan base and welcoming new members to their corner of music. It felt familial and the Holding Onto You video felt like much of the same in a strange, macabre way.
For Blurryface, Fairly Local's music video set the tone. Tyler and Josh were together for only a small portion of the video. In the rest they were isolated and trapped in some frozen purgatory. The only splashes of color were Tyler's beanie, Josh's hair, and some red lights during Tyler's second verse. Tyler wore the black paint for the first time ever in that music video, and the whole thing felt cold and isolated. That cold, snowy house felt lived in, and the moments of reprise were minimal as lights flickered and snow whipped up around the duo. And of course we cannot forget the inverted microphone which has remained a motif in their work.
Jumpsuit roared into high gear when introducing us to the Trench era. This desolate cliff side setting made the red of the bishop's clothes and the white horse he rode in on stand out. The bishop felt villainous, but as the banditos surrounded Tyler and the bishop, the sudden spreading of yellow flower petals gave a feeling of hope against what would otherwise a tale of hopelessness. Trench embodies this feeling, with themes of escape and rebellion, and the colors of yellow clashing against the harsh reds we once knew made the whole album breathe with an incredible story in its lungs.
Finally, we have Scaled and Icy. Relatively unassuming at first, but the presence of blue is very important. A light color that pairs very well with the beat to give off a bouncey feeling. However, right at the final chorus when Tyler almost seems to transport the camera into this swirling rainbow of vibrant pinks and yellows, and the song and music video roar to a crazed and upbeat finish, you feel happy and upbeat in a way that maybe no other twenty one pilots album has achieved. There is still a sinister edge to all of it, especially the bits with the Tyler and Josh clones and Trash, but this song is an undeniable ear worm. Scaled and Icy embodies the burst of energy and color that this video is, and the sinister edge that the group is known for still appears here and on the album as well.
TLDR; Twenty One Pilots manage to be just as great at art and visual storytelling in these music videos as they are with the music itself.
