The Judge
twenty one pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Na na na na oh oh
Na na na na oh oh
Na na na na oh oh

When the leader of the bad guys sang
Something soft and soaked in pain
I heard the echo from his secret hideaway
He must've forgot to close his door
As he cranked out those dismal chords
And his four walls declared him insane

I found my way
Right time wrong place
As I plead my case

You're the judge, oh no
Set me free
You're the judge, oh no
Set me free
I know my soul's freezing
Hell's hot for good reason
So please, take me

Na na na na oh
Na na na na oh
Na na na na oh

Three lights are lit
But the fourth one's out
I can tell cause it's a bit darker
Than the last night's bout
I forgot about the drought
Of light bulbs in this house
So I head out
Down a route I think is heading south
But I'm not good with directions
And I hide behind my mouth
I'm a pro at imperfections
And I'm best friends with my doubt
And now that my mind's out
And now I hear it clear and loud
I'm thinking, 'Wow
I probably should've stayed inside my house'

I found my way
Right time wrong place
As I plead my case

You're the judge, oh no
Set me free
You're the judge, oh no
Set me free
I know my soul's freezing
Hell's hot for good reason
So please

I don't know if this song
Is a surrender or a revel
I don't know if this one
Is about me or the devil

I don't know if this song
Is a surrender or a revel
I don't know if this one
Is about me or the devil

You're the judge, oh no
Set me free, oh no
You're the judge, oh no
Set me free, oh no
I know my soul's freezing
Hell's hot for good reason
So please

Na na na na oh, oh
Na na na na oh, oh
Na na na na oh, oh
Na na na na oh, oh

You're the judge, oh no (na na na na oh, oh)
Set me free (na na na na oh, oh)
You're the judge, oh no (na na na na oh, oh)
Set me free (na na na na oh, oh)
You're the judge, oh no (na na na na oh, oh)
Set me free (na na na na oh, oh)

You're the judge, oh no (na na na na oh, oh)
Set me free (na na na na oh, oh)

Overall Meaning

"The Judge" by Twenty One Pilots is a song that is open to interpretation. The first verse describes the singer overhearing the leader of the bad guys singing a song. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is imprisoned in his own world with four walls that declare him insane. The second verse is more introspective, with the singer reflecting on his own inadequacies and doubts. He seems lost and unsure of his place in the world. The chorus, addressed to the "judge," is a plea for freedom from whatever is holding the singer back.

On one level, "The Judge" can be interpreted as a song about overcoming personal difficulties or obstacles. The singer is grappling with his own doubts and fears and is seeking some sort of resolution or release. The judge can be seen as a metaphor for the singer's own conscience or sense of right and wrong. On another level, the song can be read as a commentary on society and the way we judge and label people based on their appearance or behavior.

Overall, "The Judge" is a complex, thought-provoking song that invites listeners to think deeply about the nature of judgment, freedom, and personal growth.

When the leader of the bad guys sang,
Something soft and soaked in pain,
I heard the echo from his secret hideaway,
He must’ve forgot to close his door,
As he cranked out those dismal chords,
And his four walls declared him insane.
I found my way,
Right time, wrong place,
As I pled my case.
You’re the judge, oh no, set me free,
You're the judge, oh no, set me free,
I know my soul’s freezing,
Hell’s hot for good reason, so please, take me.
Three lights are lit but the fourth one’s out,
I can tell ‘cause it’s a bit darker than the last night’s bout,
I forgot about the drought of lightbulbs in this house,
So I head out, down a route I think is heading south,
But I’m not good with directions and I hide behind my mouth,
I’m a pro at imperfections and I’m best friends with my doubt,
And now that my mind’s out, and now I hear it clear and loud,
I’m thinking, “wow, I probably shoulda stayed inside my house.”
I found my way,
Right time, wrong place,
As I pled my case.
You’re the judge, oh no, set me free,
You're the judge, oh no, set me free,
I know my soul’s freezing,
Hell’s hot for good reason, so please,
I don’t know if this song is a surrender or a revel,
I don’t know if this one is about me or the devil.
You’re the judge, oh no, set me free, oh no
You're the judge, oh no, set me free, oh no
I know my soul’s freezing,
Hell’s hot for good reason, so please,
You’re the judge, oh no, set me free.

I'm a music teacher. One of my ukulele students requested to learn this today. Never heard it before 30 minutes ago. This song is beautifully done!!! It's emotional, its catchy and it's surprisingly progressive! It changes feel a few times throughout, grooves differently throughout, has a sweet breakdown/bridge and that outro is epic! That falsetto on the FREEEEEEEE just hits! Then towards the end, the "Free" is low and grumbly/raspy. Dude its so good! Not many people write like that anymore. I really appreciate this song and have probably fallen in love with it more than I'm realizing at this moment. Great job Twenty One Pilots!!! I wanna jam with you guys!! Lmk if you'd like a little guest guitar somewhere <3

You GOTTA listen to more twenty one pilots if you like this song. You won’t be disappointed, trust me!!!

@brianleechee

@Ayana Ahmed Oh I adore them now! Am not disappointed! Started with the first album and couldn't so stop. I also love the live show where it's just Tyler, a piano and some equipment recreating some songs. So dope

@Brian Lee Chee I love that too, they did that for SiriusXM right? One of my favorite videos on YouTube.

This song is about guilt if you listen carefully. The whole "youre the judge" is about confessing your guilt to someone. He hears the bad guy sing (him) something soft and soaked in pain (sorry excuses) and his walls called his excuses bullshit. He heads down a route he thinks is heading south means he thinks he's going the right direction when in reality he's going the wrong way (morally). The darkness represents more moral fog, which he notices, but he doesn't manage to fix. It's like seeing your imperfections and not being able to fix them. He needs lightbulbs because they represent sight, and reason. He lacks lightbulbs, and therefore reason, so he heads down the wrong path. He obviously feels guilty, considering the "hell's hot for good reason". And he says set me free of course, from his guilt. Because either way when you confess the guilt will go away with time assuming it's a minor thing. The "I don't know if this song is a surrender or revel" is about not knowing how the judge reacts to his confession, will it be a surrdener or a revel. The tempo change represents the release. He finally gets to confess and it releases him from the guilt.
Tldr: the song is about guilt. I have an explanation above.
