When I was about four years old my father brought home a giant pile of lumber and, from scratch, built us a swimming pool in the back yard. Once it was set up he ran speakers out to the pool from his stereo so we could have a little music while we splashed around. While in later years we played pop radio out there, early on it was all my dad's music. He played this song often.

Now I'm old and my dad's been gone for some years. But for the rest of my life I will associate this song with summers swimming in that pool, that my father built with his own two hands. R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot.

I remember hearing this whole album, it was 1982. I was 5 or 6, sleeping in the back of a VW bug. My Mom and dad in the front seat. We were driving back from Killington VT. to NYC where we lived. I'm a man of a different ethnicity who grew up listening to all music from rock to opera.....and I love the stylings of Gordon Lightfoot when I first heard the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald years ago in my high school days I was entranced by other music than my own .you can say he was the slingshot into music other than the usual African American music. He is indeed. No other singer/songwriter has touched me as Gordon Lightfoot has. As many do I’m sure, I find the stories of my life in so many of his song. I even look like the guy! The photo on his album “ Endless Wire,” prompted my daughter, about 4 or 5:at the time, to exclaim “Daddy, it’s you!” when we saw the album in a record store. Wish I could play guitar and sing like him!

This song first got my attention way back in 1974. I went into a pizza parlor for take home. This song was playing loudly on a juke box. There was only one other person there. He was sitting alone, probably around my age (mid 20’s) just “staring” into space. He ignored me when I walked past him. I felt he was having a moment. I sensed the atmosphere. I felt a pang of sadness for this man. When I hear this song l’m strongly reminded of this encounter. God bless us all and our impacting memories of life.

In April my dad played "If You Could Read My Mind" for me from his phone. He sat and held his phone for me to listen to the entire song, and then told me how he and his brother heard Gordon would be in Oregon so they scrounged up the money and bought tickets to see him play that song. My dad just passed on May 18th, and I played that song back for him as he passed. What a treasure my dad left me with... I wish I had known of Gordon's music much earlier so we could've talked about it, but I'm so grateful my dad opened my eyes, ears and heart to the world of Gordon Lightfoot ❤

I have tears of nostalgia listening to Gordon Lightfoot's songs. I remember, as a wee little lad, music like this emanating every morning from my Dad's portable Grundig radio in our humble little kitchen. I was usually sat eating my breakfast as my Dad was getting ready to go to work to provide for all of us. With news of Gordon Lightfoot's sad passing today, I could not help but think just how incredible it is that music has such an ability to weave a mysterious and emotionally moving thread connecting our past with our present. What a fantastic songwriter Mr Lightfoot was. May his soul rest in peace.

.....I am almost 67 years young, been a Gordon Meredith Lightfoot fan since....1973, I think it was......maybe 1972, after I graduated High School......I had a massive crush on him, beginning 1974, ..as I'm sure did many women who had eyes and were breathing.....But it also due to his amazing talents and distinctive voice . One of the best storytellers and Troubadours, EVER. EVER. Even now, in his 80's.....His Life story was not without trials, temptations, and pitfalls ....Yet, he was an Inspiration and a Gift to many many thousands upon thousands of people......God Bless you , Gordon Meredith Lightfoot. 💜 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💫🎸🎶🎼

I'm a 60's and 70's child. The world was burning down around us and we listened to music as the only distraction. Once again, the world is burning, and we are listening to Gordon Lightfoot. The current generation's music is nowhere near the magic we once knew fifty+ years ago. Amazing. RIP my dear friend.

RIP Gordo.
Gordon was my favorite singer / songwriter. I love his music and have 26 G.L. albums. I am so glad that I had seen him in concert three times ( 1972 , 1988 and 2011 ) and met him and talked with him privately for five minutes ! A true musical genius and a true gentleman.
He was one of a kind and can never be replaced. 😮‍💨

Sundown hit the airwaves in April of 1974 and blew every other song away at the time, went to number 1. One of those hits that takes you back to where you were and what you were doing. Not many songs can do that.

love this sound, I learned this song with tabs/ chords and lyrics verbatim. No other song...
just this. I am a faker , but it's a party- trick that got me many results. ...including my wife , .

RIP Gordo. One of the great old time artists. He really knew how to pair instruments and vocals. Listen to his pitch/ tone ,it's matching up with the pitch of the instruments. So many musicians today miss that important point . His voice is smooth and natural. He doesn't strain at all. Here's a toast to the great Gordon Lightfoot . ...*FACToid = A gentleman named Red Shea actually did most of the lead 🎸guitar playing for Gordon's band, both live and in the studio, for many-many years. GL played mostly acoustic 🎸and the 6 & 12 strings. 🤓

I always have loved the guitar work, and had to look up who actually did it. A lot of entries on here were recently making Gordon out to be "Eddie Van Halen" or something, LOL. 😁 Just giving credit where credit is due, is all. I can remember hearing this song in 1974 in the car with my dad driving to a little league baseball game. The memory is so strong, I can't believe it's almost 50 years ago.
