Don't Think Twice It's All Right
wildes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, it ain′t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
And it ain′t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It'll never do somehow

When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You′re the reason I′m travellin' on
But don′t think twice, it's all right

And it ain′t no use in turnin' on your light, baby
That light I never knowed
And it ain′t no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road

Still, I wish there was somethin′ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
Now we never did too much talkin′ anyway
But don't think twice, it′s all right

No, it ain't no use in callin′ out my name, girl
Like you never did before
And it ain't no use in callin′ out my name, girl
I can't hear you any more

I'm thinkin′, and wandering my way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child, I′m told
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it′s all right

Ooh
Ahh
Ooh
Ahh

So long, honey, babe
Where I'm bound, I can′t tell
But "Goodbye" is too good a word, babe
So, I'll just say "Fare thee well"

I ain′t sayin' that you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don′t think twice, it′s all right

Yeah, you just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it′s all right

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," which was released in 1963, in the aftermath of the breakdown of a romantic relationship, offer a reflective and somewhat bitter message. The song is essentially a breakup song, characterized by a resigned tone, in which Dylan acknowledges that he is moving on despite having cared deeply for his former love interest. Dylan advises her to not think twice and to let him go in peace. The opening lyrics suggest that Dylan has come to realize that his former partner is not worth pondering over: "Well, it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe / If you don't know by now / And it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe / It'll never do somehow."

In the next section, Dylan seems to express regret and longing: "When your rooster crows at the break of dawn / Look out your window and I'll be gone / You're the reason I'm travelin' on / But don't think twice, it's all right." Nonetheless, he still insists that leaving her was the best thing he could ever do. Dylan further maintains that she cannot bring him back from where he is going- "And it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe / I'm on the dark side of the road" - intimating that there is no hope of rekindling their relationship. He concedes that they never really talked too much: "Now we never did too much talkin' anyway / But don't think twice, it's all right."

Lastly, the song's chorus: "So long, honey babe /Where I'm bound, I can't tell / Goodbye's too good a word, babe / So I'll just say fare thee well" - Dylan's final farewell to his love interest, is a reflection of the pain that comes with a breakup. Dylan seems to imply that leaving her was the best decision he made as she wasted his precious time, although he does not show much bitterness towards her. In the end, the song is about acceptance and the recognition that, no matter how terrible things might appear at the time, everything will work in its own way.

To try and make me change my mind and stay

Only a very small percentage of people have had the privilege of hearing this beautiful cover. We are the lucky ones.

I always loved this tune by Dylan and many others but the way WILDE does this song is extremely provocative and has great feeling artistically.
What a great re-do!
