Don't Think Twice It's Alright

Well, ain't no use sitting wonder why, babe
If you, don't know by now
Ain't no use sitting wonder why, babe
It'll never do anyhow
When your rooster, calls at the break of dawn
Look out your window, and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm travelling on
Don't think twice, it's alright

Ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
The light I'll never know
There ain't no use turning on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
I wish there was something you could do, or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
But we never did too much talking anyways
So, don't think twice, it's alright

So it ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
Like you never done before
Ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm thinking and wondering, walking down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
Give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walking down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye is too good a word, babe
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't saying that you treated me unkind
You could have done better, but I don't mind
You just sort of wasted my precious time
So, don't think twice, it's all right

Don't think twice, it's all right
Don't think twice, it's all right

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" offer a resigned and bittersweet farewell to a former love. Throughout the song, the singer urges their former partner not to dwell on the past or try to change their mind. The song almost seems to be therapeutic, as the singer has already made up their mind to leave and move on. In the first verse, the singer sings that there's "no use sitting wondering why" their lover never seems to understand their point of view, and even though it hurts to leave, it's time to do so. The second verse speaks to how the singer has already moved on, and there's no need for the former lover to try and change their mind.

The third verse paints a picture of a lonesome, wandering soul who has loved and lost children as well. The lines "give her my heart, but she wanted my soul," speak to a loss of identity and the feeling of being taken advantage of. The final verse is perhaps the saddest, as the singer realizes there is no way to say farewell except to simply state "fare thee well." But even with that sad goodbye, the singer seems to hold no resentment towards their former love, singing "you could have done better, but I don't mind."

This song is a reminder that sometimes, it's better to move on and not look back.

Going through a breakup at 64 years old, and this song, written by a 21-year-old, 60 years ago, is at the top of my list.

@jumbles1957

Same here… but I’m 66. The song pretty much sums it all up for me. I’m traveling down that road, where I’m going I don’t know… but I certainly can’t go back

@didierdousset2666

Messieurs, si la mélodie de ce morceau est effectivement de très bonne facture, le texte en revanche ne brille certainement pas par sa poésie, et est plutôt d'un faible niveau littéraire.
Gentlemen, if the melody of this piece is indeed very good, the text on the other hand certainly does not shine with its poetry, and is rather of a low literary level.

@beanboi3178

It be like That

@sybell100

Please take care of yourself. I send you my love from Kerala, India. There are people in this world who want to be with you right now.

I wish I could send you some warm hugs and gifts @drothberg3

I wish I could make you a hot beverage.

I am a 26 year old man, I just had my break up with a wonderful woman. I feel you my old pal.

@ivanangeli

it should be easy at 64, to break with someone - just know that all important things you already have done, carier, kids, maybe grandkids, house, education - now it is all just fun and support. Don;t think about it, focus on your family

As a kid, I used to think the "you just kinda wasted my precious time" line was kind of a throwaway line. As and adult, I understand it might be the soul of the whole song.

@5trezip23

Nice point

@wills9709

Very interesting point. I never thought about it that way until yuh ou

@wills9709

you pointed that out. But I sort of felt that way too.
