Draw Me Nearer
Eikon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh, light a fire,
let it burn,
drawing me nearer.
Ooh, light a fire,
let it burn,
drawing me nearer.
Ooh, light a fire,
let it burn,
drawing me nearer.
Ooh, light a fire,
let it burn,
drawing me nearer.

I – I – I – I
I can hear you
singing over me:
"oh sweet child,
oh sweet child".
I – I – I – I
I can hear you
singing over me:
"oh sweet child,
oh sweet child".
I – I – I – I
I can hear you
singing over me:
"oh sweet child,
oh sweet child"
I – I – I – I
I can hear you
singing over me:
"oh sweet child,
oh sweet child".

Light me up,
like your son
Hold a match to my soul
Come nearer,
speak louder
I wanna be with you every day.
Light me up,
like your son
Hold a match to my soul
Come nearer,
speak louder
I wanna be with you every day.

You are my father
No matter where I go
You are my father
No matter what I do
You are my father
No matter where I go

You are my father
No matter what I do.

Overall Meaning

The song "Draw Me Nearer" by Eikon is a call for God's presence to come closer and be felt more intimately. The first section of the chorus repeats the line "light a fire, let it burn, drawing me nearer" four times. The fire, in this case, represents the Holy Spirit, and the desire to let it burn and draw the singer closer to God. The repetition emphasizes the need for the fire to burn until the singer, who is the subject of the song, is drawn closer to God. The second chorus repeats the phrase "I can hear you singing over me: 'Oh sweet child, oh sweet child" four times. This repetition of singsong lyrics indicates the love and concern God has for the singer, reminding them of their place as God's child.

The lyrics "light me up like your son, hold a match to my soul, come nearer, speak louder, I wanna be with you every day" convey a desire to be close to God, like Jesus was close to Him on Earth. The request to hold a match to the singer's soul is a symbolic request for God's spirit to light a fire deep inside their soul. The language used to represent this fire is in line with the Pentecostal belief that the Holy Spirit comes down like a burning fire, bringing power and passion to those who are baptized in its flames. The final verse, "You are my father, no matter where I go, no matter what I do" reaffirms the personal relationship between the singer and God. The singer understands that no matter what they do or where they go, God is their constant Father.

Overall, "Draw Me Nearer" is an emotional song that speaks directly to the heart of anyone who longs to feel the presence of God more deeply. The lyrics emphasize the importance of allowing the Holy Spirit to ignite a fire within them and lead them closer to God. It is a call to be intentional about pursuing a closer relationship with God and a reminder that He is always there, no matter what.

I dig this gospel song!! It sounds haunting, desperate, in depth love, & all knowing. I realize the lyrics are repetitive but to me seems new each time they're repeated. It provokes you to sing along & it has an open feeling to it. It feels it doesn't have a genre that it longs to be categorized by or put into. That it's fit to be played in a club or church...and provokes the same innate longing. To follow The Lord!! Even if an individual isn't per say a gospel music fan would & long to sing along. I can't get it out of my head...the melody & the lyrics!
