Prior to the release of Foo Fighters' 1995 debut album Foo Fighters, which featured Grohl as the only official member, Grohl recruited bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, both formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as Nirvana touring guitarist Pat Smear. The band began with performances in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith quit during the recording of their second album, The Colour and the Shape (1997); most of the drum parts were re-recorded by Grohl. Smear departed soon afterward but appeared as a guest with the band frequently from 2005; he rejoined in 2010.
Smear and Goldsmith were replaced by Franz Stahl and Taylor Hawkins; Stahl was fired before the recording of the group's third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999). The band briefly continued as a trio until Chris Shiflett joined on guitar after the completion of There Is Nothing Left to Lose. Foo Fighters released their fourth album, One by One, in 2002. It was followed with the two-disc In Your Honor (2005), which was split between acoustic songs and heavier material. Foo Fighters released their sixth album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, in 2007.
For Foo Fighters' seventh studio album, Wasting Light (2011), produced by Butch Vig, Smear returned as a full member. Sonic Highways (2014) was released as the soundtrack to the television miniseries directed by Grohl. Concrete and Gold (2017) was the second Foo Fighters album to reach number one in the United States and their first studio album to feature longtime session and touring keyboardist Rami Jaffee as a full member. The band's tenth album, Medicine at Midnight (2021), was the last to feature Hawkins, who died in March 2022.
Produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, "But Here We Are" (the band's 11th) would release on June 2nd, 2023.
On May 21, 2023, some days before the album's release, Foo Fighters would officially announce that Josh Freese would be the new drummer.
Over the course of their career, Foo Fighters have won 15 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album five times, making them among the most successful rock acts in Grammy history. In 2021, the band was announced as recipients of the first-ever "Global Icon" award at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, their first year of eligibility.

It's over and I feel fine
Nothing you could say is gonna change my mind
Waited and I waited the longest night
Nothing like the taste of sweet decline
I was down, I fell, I fell so fast
Dropping like the grains in an hourglass
Dancing with the bones of my buried past
Never mind, there's nothing I could do
Bet your life there's something killing you
It's a shame we have to die, my dear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
What a way to go, but have no fear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
I'm finished, I'm getting you off my chest
Made you come clean in a dirty dress
A promise is a promise you kept in check
Hard to cross a heart that beats this fast
Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure, but the pleasure's been mine, all mine
And never mind, there's nothing I could do
(Never mind, there's nothing I could do)
Bet your life there's something killing you
It's a shame we have to die, my dear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
What a way to go, but have no fear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
Ain't no way, DOA
Ain't no way, DOA
Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure, but the pleasure's been mine, all mine
And never mind, there's nothing I could do
(Never mind, there's nothing)
Bet your life there's something killing you
It's a shame we have to die, my dear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
What a way to go, but have no fear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
It's a shame we have to disappear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time

The lyrics of Foo Fighters' song DOA present a sense of finality and acceptance of a situation that has concluded. The singer of the song admits to having committed an act that has resulted in consequences that they're not willing to change their mind about. They've waited a long time for this outcome, and they relish the taste of decline that comes with it. The lines "Dancing with the bones of my buried past" evoke images of a person being haunted by their past actions, yet finding a sense of joy in the culmination of their past experiences.
The song contains an undertone of mortality and the permanence of death. The lyrics and repetition of the line "No one's getting out of here alive" remind listeners of their mortality and the inevitability of death. The admission that "nothing lasts" emphasizes the fleeting nature of life and further emphasizes the importance of living in the moment and seizing the opportunity when one is presented with it. The song's conclusion reinforces the inevitability of disappearing, but the singer is unafraid and does not have any regrets.
