The song was featured in the 1999 movie Varsity Blues, during the climactic scene of the final football game. It was also featured in the 2001 film Not Another Teen Movie, in a scene parodying the aforementioned Varsity Blues football game. Part of the song is also heard in the 2010 buddy-cop comedy The Other Guys.
In a post-September 11 episode of CBS's Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn (September 21, 2001), Grohl and bassist Nate Mendel performed an acoustic rendition of the song. A full group acoustic version is available on the 2006 live album and DVD Skin and Bones. An acoustic version was also performed live on The Howard Stern Show by Grohl. The 2006 album Sound of Superman features an acoustic cover of "My Hero" by Paramore.
The song, along with the rest of the album, was released as downloadable content for the Rock Band series of music video games on November 13, 2008.
My Hero
Foo Fighters Lyrics

Take your pictures down and shake it out
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out?
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary
Kudos, my hero
Leavin' all the mess
You know my hero
The one that's on
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary
The lyrics of Foo Fighters' My Hero are full of admiration for the hero referred to in the song. The song seems to be written to someone who has influenced the songwriter's life positively. The first verse talks about the hero being too important to talk about because he/she is an essential part of the writer's life. However, the second line suggests moving on and getting over some pain, indicating that the hero is also an escape.
The following verses talk about how the hero is ordinary and how the best of them, including the hero, sometimes bleed out or fail. However, the writer gives credit to the hero, saying that he/she has left the mess and moved on. The writer concludes by repeating the chorus, affirming the hero's ordinariness, and celebrating his/her action.
The song's chorus, "There goes my hero, watch him as he goes, there goes my hero, he's ordinary," is the highlight of the song. It suggests that the hero is an average person. However, the hero is recognized for the actions that make him/her a hero to the writer. The song is very relatable as everybody has that one person they look up to, and it's not necessarily some celebrity or public figure. It could be a family member, a friend, or even oneself.

My son and I was supposed to spend the summer learning this song. He was a drummer and I was a on guitar. My 12 year old son Tristan Van Lu passed away on 3/22/23. He was the best drummer I have ever met, he was my hero. I rocked this song out at his funeral, it was the last time I will ever touch a guitar again. Played until my fingers bled my boy!. I love you so much my son, my best friend I will never forget you and will never stop missing you my son....
