Artangels
Grimes Lyrics

Oh, ooh ooh, hoo ooh ooh ooh

Angel baby, there is
Nothing I'd rather do
Think I love you, but I know that I will never do
Everything I love becomes everything I do

So, tell me anything, anything you want to
You're my darling girl, tell me what's on your mind
Tell me anything, anything you feel like
Anything you feel like

Je comprends
Je l'ai dit
C'est la vie
Oh Montréal, I pull apart
I don't mind

Running every red-light, you were right
Oh Montréal don't break my heart
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you

Ooh ooh, hoo ooh ooh ooh
Angel baby, you got me feeling kinda blue
Think I need you and you know the things that I would do
Everything I love is a consolation after you

So, tell me anything, anything you like to
You're my darling girl, tell me what's on your mind (what's on your mind)
Tell me anything, anything you feel like
Anything you feel like

Je comprends
Je l'ai dit
C'est la vie
Oh Montréal, I pull apart
I don't mind

Running every red-light, you were right
Oh Montréal don't break my heart
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you

Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh, oh
Ooh ooh ooh, oh

I don't need your medicine
Gonna dance all night
I'm high on adrenaline
That's right, that's right, that's right

I don't need no medicine
Gonna dance all night
I'm high on adrenaline
That's right, that's right, that's right
That's right, that's right, that's right

That's right, that's right, that's right
That's right, that's right, that's right

Overall Meaning

"Artangels" by Grimes appears to be a love song with a twist. The opening lines express dedication to this "angel baby" Grimes is singing to, acknowledging the other person's value in her life. However, Grimes follows this praise up by stating that she will never be able to love them. Grimes seems to be grappling with the idea that the things she loves often consume her entirely, and loving someone could be too big of a risk for her. Throughout the song, Grimes calls out to her lover, asking them to share whatever is on their mind, but is cautious not to offer too much of herself in return, almost as if she is trying to keep her distance emotionally.

The chorus repeats the sentiment that Grimes thinks she loves the other person, but there is always a question mark, like she is not entirely sure. The song continues with words in French, which, when translated, seem to mean "I understand, I said it, that's life" and refer to Montreal, the place where Grimes was living when she wrote the song. The tone of the song shifts slightly here, becoming more introspective and dreamy, especially as Grimes sings, "I don't mind, running every red-light, you were right." There is a sense that the other person in the relationship is more grounded than Grimes, seeing things that she doesn't, yet Grimes is happy to follow this person along.
