The Circle Breaks
Hourglass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A man walks down a beaten path
His hands are worn and cracked
Haunted by the images of his past
There's nothing left but to look back

Standing incomplete and alone
Her leaves will fall no more
With all the things that she's been shown
If only she had known before

As the circle breaks the trend
Good things must always end
You will see that life lives for you
And that you can transcend
When you take the things you've found
And stop to look around
You will see it's not the end
When the circle breaks the trend

A soft wind blows and with it brings
The scenes of days long past
When leaves were green and branches strong
Those days went by so fast

As he walks a path leads to
An old friend he once knew
In this holy place he used to play
To wash all pain and fear away

As the circle breaks the trend
Good things must always end
You will see that life lives for you
And that you can transcend
When you take the things you've found
And stop to look around
You will see it's not the end
When the circle breaks the trend

He stops to rest and catch his breath
A leaf descends onto the ground
He then looks up, he's taken back
Left in awe by what he's found

A better thing they could not find
As night proclaims the end of day
As he leaves this world behind
He's finally found the place he'll stay

As the circle breaks your trend
Good things must always end
You will see that life lives for you
And that you can transcend
When you take the things you've found
And stop to look around

You will see it's not the end
When the circle breaks your trend

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Circle Breaks" by Hourglass seem to be about the idea that life is fleeting and that we need to appreciate the good things while we have them because they may not last. The song tells the story of an old man who is haunted by his past, but as he walks down a familiar path, he discovers an old friend and is filled with a sense of peace. Similarly, a tree is described as standing alone with the knowledge of all the things that it has been shown, but it is too late because its leaves have already fallen.

The lyrics encourage listeners to appreciate the present moment and to embrace change when it comes. The message is that good things must end, but life still has a lot of beauty and meaning to offer. When the circle breaks, meaning when we break free from patterns and habits that hold us back, we can transcend and find a sense of peace and fulfillment.

Overall, the song evokes a sense of calm and acceptance of the cycles of life. It offers a message of hope that even when things seem to be ending, there is always a new beginning waiting to be discovered.

Red flag red, all the sentinels are damned
The Tokyo kitty, swallow, rose, and canary
Tick tick tick, do you recognize the sounds as the grains count down
Trickle down right in front of you?

A little tickle tickle tickle, all your neck hairs prickle
As they barbecue the sentinels then eat them right in front of you
Hourglass smashed, a billion little pieces
The count down, carry on: five, four, three, two

Took me a couple of listens to get it, but this is a perfect example of artists evolving, taking risks, and not caring what anyone thinks. This is the best rock album to come out in a while.

I like it too and feel the same way. However, it feels like something Marilyn Manson has already done. Doesn't take away from the depth and artistry.

Maynard's vocals will always be superior.

You can really hear the evolution in their music over the years. This and TalkTalk are easily my favorite songs on the album.

"Get the Lead Out" makes me want to dance every time. A lot of strong stylistic choices on this album.

I’ll admit I slept on this album when it first came out because at first glance, it wasn’t hard enough for me at the time. I was also dealing with some pretty hardcore traumatic bullshit and I was coping through much heavier music. However I have really liked the songs that have popped up in my suggested videos. I love the message they all convey. I’ve said for years, we are inching towards our own destruction at a snails pace, afraid that we are creating some dystopian future, when in reality we are already living in it.

Gotta love a band so secure in their musical talent that they just DGAF and make whatever music they want. Thanks for another great song APC.

Nicholas Stangel Exactly my thoughts! Gotta love the story telling of the new album.

Music genre is not defined by age. I am in my 50s have always been into metal/rock and always will. I think this is an excellent album....
