Kahan released his first single, "Young Blood" in January 2017 and released four other singles over the course of 2017. His fans are known as "busyheads". Kahan made his television debut in 2018 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert performing the single "Hurt Somebody". Kahan released his debut EP carrying the same name in January 2018, including an updated version of titular song with fellow Republic Records artist Julia Michaels.

Noah Kahan was born in Strafford, Vermont and he attended Hanover High School in Hanover, New Hampshire. Kahan began writing songs at age 8 and uploaded them to SoundCloud where his music began to gain exposure.

At age 17, Kahan began working with school friend music producers (Cwenga Matanzima). This attracted the attention of his current manager Drew Simmons of Foundations Artist Management. His music also caught the attention of songwriters such as Dan Wilson known for his work with Adele, Scott Harris, Carrie Underwood, among others. Kahan deferred his admission to Tulane University to pursue his developing music career. Kahan has said that two career goals he wished for were to be verified on Instagram and to have a Wikipedia page.

Kahan cites some of his inspirations as Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, Counting Crows, Hozier, and Mumford and Sons.

In 2016, Kahan signed to Republic Records and he began working with producer Joel Little, known for his work with Lorde and Khalid, with whom he recorded six songs. Kahan released his first single "Young Blood" in January 2017 and gained over 9 million streams.

In September 2017, Kahan released "Hurt Somebody", the lead single from his forthcoming debut EP of the same name. "Hurt Somebody" was re-recorded later in 2017 featuring Grammy nominated artist Julia Michaels. "Hurt Somebody" was released in January 2018.

On April 8, 2019, Kahan announced his debut full-length studio album entitled Busyhead, and included the duet version of "Hurt Somebody" as well as two other singles "False Confidence" and "Mess". It was released on June 14, 2019.

On April 30, 2020, Noah announced on his Instagram that he would drop an EP at midnight. He then dropped "Cape Elizabeth." The album was recorded over one week at Kahan's friend Phin Choukas' home studio in Vermont exactly one week after the singer left New York City in March to avoid COVID-19. "Cape Elizabeth" was then released on May 1, 2020.

On June 17, 2021 Kahan announced his second full-length album titled "I Was/I Am". Five days later he announced the "I Was/I Am" tour. On September 17, 2021, the album was released. Throughout the summer leading up to the release of the album Kahan released “Part of Me”, “Godlight”, and “Animal” as singles ahead of the album drop. “Part of Me” was the only one of the three singles to be dropped before the album announcement.

Kahan opened for Ben Folds and Anderson East in the United States in February 2017 and then went on to open for Milky Chance in March 2017. Later opening on an East Coast tour with The Strumbellas that began on October 12, 2017, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and concluded on November 14, 2017, in Buffalo, New York. He performed at Billboard's Industry Night on November 16, 2017, at the Ludlow House in New York City, showcasing his pop-folk song "Fine". In April and May 2018, Kahan supported George Ezra on his North American tour and then directly after embarked on his own tour, headlining shows across Europe throughout May 2018. Kahan then embarked on a world tour in October and November 2018, with Dean Lewis joining him in support for the North American leg. He later opened for Dean Lewis on his tour of Europe in February 2019, then joining James Bay on his North American tour for the following month. Kahan toured for 'The Busyhead Tour', in which he headlined shows across North America from September to November 2019.

In October 2021, Kahan headlined his 'I Am / I Was Tour', with support from Blake Rose and Genevieve Stokes.

On July 8, 2022, Kahan announced a U.S. tour for the fall and released the single "Stick Season", which he had first teased in October 2020. Over the following two years, the song became a fan favorite, further growing in popularity on social media app TikTok. Kahan followed it up with the release of "Northern Attitude" on September 16.

On October 14, 2022, Kahan released his album Stick Season. According to early reviews of the album from AP News, "There’s irony there because these feel like songs both longtime listeners and newer fans will want to belt back to Kahan — not because they’re produced for stadiums or arenas, but because they’re full of nostalgic melodies that will resonate far beyond New England." Kahan wrote this album during the pandemic which he spent back home in Vermont. Stick Season leans more into the folk genre than the rest of his older music which were more pop sounding. Kahan says that in his album, Stick Season, he wanted to pay homage to the folk singers that he grew up listening to. He adds that his greatest goal as a songwriter is to write music that other people can relate to and to be able to throw that lifeline to someone.

On March 17, 2023, Kahan was featured on Joy Oladokun's single "We're All Gonna Die", which was also released as part of her April 2023 album, Proof of Life.

On June 9, 2023, Kahan released a deluxe version of Stick Season titled, Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever), which includes seven previously unreleased tracks.

I feel this song is saying to take a break, from everything.

The fact he says "don't worry I'll do your laundry covered in dirt" to me says, "don't worry you go and rest, I've got this". It's like having a support system that doesn't exist. I wish I had this. I truly do.

That's the line that got me too. I feel like it has a double meaning too. Yesterday I was so distraught , dissociated , and so , so angry. My boyfriend and my brother heard my panic attack but didn't come in , they're believers in self soothe which I appreciate as I have co dependant tendencies. I drank too much and took too many pills to try and quiet the voices. Not dangerously. Just enough to stop them. After I calmed down , my boyfriend came into my room , cleaned up for me because in my frustration I tore down my positive posters and affirmations on my wall. He laid next to me and reassured me. I've been battling with feelings of self-hatred and hollowness for years and recently I've been crying almost every day.
This song may not mean much when you're in a good place mentally but damn it speaks differently in the lows.

I used to suffer with drug addiction and alcohol addiction due to loss of my family and friends very young. I was left alone, empty and unstable. Throughout life I have been hurt and beat down by ones that “loved” me. I was never meant for love i thought nor did anyone wanna show me otherwise. A girl i’ve known my entire life came back in it and she changed my life.She made me feel something i’ve never felt before she lit the spark in me that burned out along time ago. I’ve been loving this song since it came out. As someone who was abused by their mother growing up I never really had that nurturing and comforting motherly presence in my life and I feel that absence sharply. In addition to this, my only sibling, my older brother who was more like a parent to me than my own mother succumbed to his addiction and passed away just over a year ago, and I miss his hugs and his smiles and nearly everything about him. This song has helped me enormously when I’m feeling insecure and inadequate and in need of a hug I’m too afraid to ask for. Music like this stabilises me in a way my mother couldn’t. This song and some others with the same feel are on a playlist I listen to whenever I feel alone and hopeless, empty, not enough. They tell me that everything will be okay, the sort of trivial reassurance I never got from my parents but means so much more than you’d think it would. I think as humans all we really want is to be held and told it’s all going to be alright, no matter what life throws at you or how you’re handling it. Thank you, this song has saved me so many times and given me the love I was starved of in my childhood.

I stumbled upon this randomly as I was in a bad head space a while ago and I was a little to far from my phone to hear the lyrics, it's like it touched my heart instead of my ears. As I played it back again...it all made sense.

Someone very close to me has been been recently diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. When we figured it out everything that we have struggled with for the last few years all made sense. I wish I could be a kid again, feel something pure again. Even my teenage years were better than this, I understood pain and knew where it came from. I knew what I wanted in life. You can get through this, that's how life works. It is not that really bad actually(although i feel that way sometimes) do your shower, and nice tea or water it will help you if u are crying a lot. Crying is ok, express your feelings and you will get through this. May not be just a phase but there is always the little window lights your dark room. You are not alone. You are not weird. I hate how my heart and mind are always at war with once another. I dont remember how it felt to be okay. I don't think Ive ever been okay. Some days I feel on top of the world and I love myself, I feel like I might have a purpose. But then some days I feel like giving up because I feel like I mess things up and then my hope goes down the drain. It's so tiring. . This song really brings me tears, I have so much love and so much hurt that I want to let go of, for once in my life I need to feel okay.... Music takes me somewhere I can feel and be at peace with. I’m so glad I found this artist. I was just randomly scrolling through YT about a year ago and I stumbled upon his song called “Fine”. Ever since then I’ve just been obsessed with his music and can’t stop listening. He’s such an underrated artist and I hope he gets the recognition he deserves! His songs have helped me through so much in my life and I just hope that more people can find his music so that it can help them as well!

Thank you for making this song Noah, I'm struggling for more than half of my life now with bipolar disorder and PTSD plus a few more problems. Your song makes me feel sad, but not in a negative way, it just makes me feel how much I suffer through my disorder, it is the first song, that really touches my heart and let's me deal with all the emotions my problems hinder me from feeling most times, it opens the way to a better more peaceful life with myself; thank you.

This song carried me through dark times in the 2020 lockdown. I was only 12 and I was suddenly forced to grow up by this crazy thing that was happening to the whole world, and I didn’t know how to handle it. In spite of spending lockdown with my family, I felt alone, and like I had nobody to turn to.
And a year later, we were on our way to a wedding when this song started playing in my headphones. Till then I couldn’t listen to it because of all the pain tied to the song. But in that moment it felt peaceful, like a congratulations for overcoming one of the hardest times of my life.
I’m 16 now, and sometimes I still break beneath the weight of the earth. But I know your light is always there when I need it. Thank you💙

I am crying for the 10nth time listening this. Usually when something happens I just play it to gain some courage.. of not giving up..
it reminds me of myself at some parts of the song, like everything that’s going on in my life and then again everything anyone else I love is going through. My dad is struggling right now with all his thoughts and wanting to give us everything. I saw him today and what your song says “today you look older than me” just hit me so hard. Because today he did look so much older than I’ve ever seen him before. I want to be his light , my dad’s and mom’s light. If I could only give them a couple of my years just to have them next to me forever…… 😔 I know life is like this.. but I still hope , I hope for a better tomorrow.

A friend of mine, who is a brother to me, my best friend, he's always gone through a lot ever since his mother passed away, his dad cheated when his mother was sick, his aunts and uncles always called him a burden. He was 15 when his mum died, and now he's almost 18... At a tender age of 15 he had to g through being called a burden, being hated on, being called a bad kid, being abandoned by his own father.

I sent him this song last year and we play it whenever we're together, and I just want him to know that we're in this together. I just want to be there for him no matter what, I'll be the light that you can't make, and I'm not busy anyway, so call me if you need to, if you want to. Thank you Noah for this song. It will always have a special place in our hearts.

This song is a great reflection of tough times. My wife and I just had twin girls, im going to school and work over 42 hours on weekends. All this to make ends meet. Very difficult but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Something I've learned in my life is that I hate to see people struggle and I want to help as many people as I can. Thankyou for all being great people. I know everyone around me thinks I need the most help of all, but Ill always have the strength I need to keep going. I know I have a brain tumor, I know I only had 12 months to live, but I knew Id survive, and here I am 11 years later, alive and working to make the people around me smile. I don't know what miracle happened so I could survive, but promise me I'll work hard to let people struggle less. I love you.
