Oenone Part 1
Pink Floyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have always been here
I have always looked out from behind these eyes
It feels like more than a lifetime
Feels like more than a lifetime

Sometimes I get tired of the waiting
Sometimes I get tired of being in here
Is this the way it's always been?
Could it ever have been different?

Do you ever get tired of the waiting?
Do you ever get tired of being in there?

Don't worry, nobody lives forever
Nobody lives forever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for Pink Floyd's song A New Machine Part 1 revolves around existential questioning and the longing for change. The opening lines "I have always been here / I have always looked out from behind these eyes," suggest a sense of being trapped and unable to escape oneself, as if the singer has been existing in the same monotony for their entire life. The repetition of "it feels like more than a lifetime" emphasizes the weight of this feeling, the sense of a life stagnated and unchanging.

The chorus, "Sometimes I get tired of the waiting / Sometimes I get tired of being in here / Is this the way it's always been? / Could it ever have been different?" speaks to the desire for something, anything, to happen, to break free from the tedium that has come to define their existence. The question posed in the lyrics is especially poignant as it begs the listener to consider whether the circumstances of their life, like the singer's, are predetermined or if they have the power to change their fate.

The final lines "Do you ever get tired of the waiting? / Do you ever get tired of being in there? / Don't worry, nobody lives forever / Nobody lives forever" suggest a resignation to the idea that even if one is trapped, it won't last forever, and perhaps the singer is attempting to embrace the momentary freedom found in this realization. The song speaks to the universal human desire for something different and the uncertainty of whether it is possible.

The way Rick and David mesh towards the end of this is uncanny. Great visuals too. Thanks for posting!

I got into everything Pink Floyd in the 1970s. This is the first time I have ever heard this piece. There obviously was much more available than I ever dreamed. Rick Wright was a great talent.

Underrated song writer, keyboardist (Syd's right hand man), cool, smooth harmonies (contrasting Syd's vocals and blending perfectly with Dave's and finally arriving in Space), and do like his lead vocals as well: the producer, Alan Parsons (Dark Side of the Moon) specifically retrieved a singer that sounded similar to Richard Wright and formed The Alan Parson's Project. In my opinion, I believe Richard Wright was glue that held the band and sound together. Starting with Syd's way out there guitar distorted effects and giving it musicality that started a new genre: Cosmic Rock. It sounds as though Syd was trying to reach stars; Rick gave him gave him that extra musical boost that got the listeners there. However, when Dave Gilmour arrived, it was Richard who lead Dave into space that Mr. Gilmour got nick name Spacey Dave to sound like Pink Floyd but not imitating Syd's style; hence, the song "Echoes." Compare "Echoes" to "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Astonomy Domine" (one of my favorite live performances by them (hint: it's in black and white). I have proof read this...

Should’ve made Meddle a double album and put some of the Zabriskie Point stuff on it...this one would’ve been a perfect side three to follow up Echoes.

Kreso Caren
