Cry / Electric Co.
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somebody cry, somebody cry
Somebody cry
Somebody's high, somebody's high
Somebody's high
Don't you look back, don't you look back

Somebody cry, somebody cry
Somebody cry
I can't say why, I'm waiting

Boy, stupid boy
Don't sit at the table until you're able to
Toy, broken toy
You shout and shout till you're inside out

If you don't know
Electric Co.
If you don't know
Electric Co.
Alright

Red, running red
You play for real, take your feel
Hold your head
You don't shout, you're spoon fed

Till you don't know
Electric Co.
Till you don't know
Electric Co.

Break it up
I love the crowd
Lift me up

If you don't know
Electric Co.
If you don't know
Electric Co.
If you don't know
Electric Co.

If you don't know
Electric Co.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Cry / Electric Co. by U2 are quite cryptic, with various interpretations possible. One way to understand the first verse is as a juxtaposition of different attitudes or states of mind. While somebody is crying and somebody else is high, the singer urges them not to look back. This could be interpreted as a call for resilience and focus, an exhortation not to dwell on past pain or to get lost in the elation of the moment. The repetition of "somebody cry" and "somebody's high" could also evoke a sense of empathy and connection between listeners, as if the singer is inviting them to share their emotions.

The second verse introduces a boy who is not yet mature enough to sit at the table, to use the metaphor of adulthood. He is like a broken toy that keeps shouting until he's inside out, suggesting that his behavior is self-destructive and futile. Then, the chorus returns with a phrase that could be seen as U2's own brand: "If you don't know Electric Co." This is a reference to a real-life company in Dublin that Bono knew as a child and that also inspired the band's name. However, in the song, it takes on a broader meaning, almost like a password or a secret code that separates insiders from outsiders. To "know Electric Co." could imply a familiarity with a certain style, sound, or attitude, something that the boy in the song apparently lacks.

How the hell did Bono get up there and how did he get back so quickly? Amazing. This is the version that ended up on UABRS that autumn.

Beautiful how there were no phones so everybody was enjoying the actual concert !!!

Great concert!!! Best outdoor concert I ever attended. Can you believe U2 was the first warm up band at this concert. Billing higher was Joe Cocker, Stray Cats, Motor Head, and headliner was Steve Miller. Might have been one other but not sure. This was also the first Rock concert ever broadcast LIVE across the USSR !!!!

It goes without saying the U2 would be the main act these days, I'm actually going to see them playing at Marvel Stadium next Friday, the opening act is Noel Gallagher.

Just awesome to see this in 2012... I was turned onto U2 by a dorm mate at college. SUNY New Paltz Bouton Hall in 1982. I was hooked by November and was so psyched to hear new stuff from them. This was recorded in 1983 Amazing. I spent my summer after New Paltz in Germany in 1985. So that is an interesting coincidence. Germany has an appreciation for music and they are good people. Especially the young generation. I am the same age as members of U2. My youth was with the Beatles. Adulthood U2!
