If The God Will Send His Angels
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nobody else here baby
No-one else here to blame
No-one to point the finger
It's just you and me and the rain

Nobody made you do it
No one put words in your mouth
Nobody here taking orders
When love took a train heading south
It's the blind leading the blond
It's the stuff, it's the stuff of country songs

Hey, if God will send his angels
And if God will send a sign
And if God will send his angels
Would everything be alright?

God's got his phone off the hook, babe
Would he even pick up if he could?
It's been a while since we saw that child
Hangin' round this neighborhood

See his mother dealing in a doorway
See Father Christmas with a begging bowl
And Jesus' sister's eyes are a blister
The High Street never looked so low

It's the blind leading the blond
It's the cops collecting for the cons
So where is the hope and
Where is the faith and the love?
What's that you say to me
Does love light up your Christmas tree?
The next minute you're blowing a fuse
And the cartoon network turns into the news

If God will send his angels
And if God will send a sign
Well if God will send his angels
Where do we go?
Where do we go?

Jesus never let me down
You know Jesus used to show me the score
Then they put Jesus in show business
Now it's hard to get in the door

It's the stuff, it's the stuff of country songs
But I guess it was something to go on
Hey, if God will send his angels
I sure could use them here right now
Well, if God will send his angels
And I don't want to lie
I don't wanna love I want to feel the song

And I don't want to lie
And I wanna feel the song

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of U2’s song If The God Will Send His Angels are reflective of the theme of love, faith, and hope in the midst of a dark and broken world. The first verse sets the stage for a conversation between two people who are alone in the midst of the rain, with nobody to blame but themselves for the state of their relationship. The second verse describes a grim scene in a poverty-stricken neighborhood where even the traditional symbols of Christmas - a begging Father Christmas and Jesus’ sister with blistered eyes - are out of place. The chorus expresses the hope that God will intervene in some way to make everything alright, but acknowledges that it might be too late.

The third verse takes a political turn, speaking about the corruption and chaos in the world, with cops collecting for the cons and the news turning into a cartoon network. The fourth verse is a poignant commentary on the modern Christian church, juxtaposing the image of Jesus showing the score with his current place in show business where it is hard to get in the door. The final chorus expresses a desire to feel the song of love rather than just speak the truth, suggesting that the only hope for redemption is found through the expression of genuine love.

Particularly compared with the latest two crappy records ...
And this Edge sound in this song woooowww

@nianfiedler9691

for so true. i have always loved it, but as i get older, it truly has become a masterpiece. it’s boldness, ruggedness, looseness, darkness, messiness, deepness just hits harder now.

@nianfiedler9691

@@albertoostinelli8946 ?!?! SOI is a great record and SOE is very good. SOI is their best since POP. Every Breaking Wave, Volcano, Iris, Raised by Wolves, Sleep like a Baby Tonight, and The Troubles are all fantastic.
I think as we get older we don’t give as much time and consideration to newer music and can get stuck in an “era” of U2. Like the post here says, POP grew greater over the the years. So far SOI has as well for me.

Rogelio creo que hay que soñar y luchar y esta canción es solamente eso, y también eso

@chrisdee5032

This song needs a regular slot in U2's set list. Incredibly underrated song from a criminally underrated album.
