Last Night on Earth
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She feels the ground is giving way
But she thinks we're better off that way
The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away

Well she doesn't care what it's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth

She's not waiting on a savior to come
She's at a bus stop with the News of the World
And the Sun
Sun here it comes
She's not waiting for anyone

You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away

Well she knows just what it's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
Last night on earth

Slipping away
Slip slide
Too many slipping away
The world turns and we get dizzy
Slipping away

She's living, living next week now
You know she's gonna to pay you back somehow
She hasn't been to bed in a week
She'll be dead soon, then she'll sleep

You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away
You gotta give it away

She already knows it hurts
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth

Overall Meaning

The U2 song "Last Night on Earth" is a reflective and introspective track about the feeling that the ground is giving way underneath one's feet, while at the same time living in the moment and recognizing the finite nature of existence. The lyrics suggest that the more one takes, the less they feel, while the less they know, the more they are disposed to believe. However, the song's message is ultimately a positive one, encouraging listeners to give of themselves freely and without reservation.

The song's opening lines speak to the disorientation and confusion that can come with living in an uncertain world. The singer seems to be grappling with feelings of anxiety and uncertainty, but recognizes that sometimes things have to fall apart in order for new structures to be built. The repetition of the phrase "you gotta give it away" underscores the idea that the path to fulfillment often lies in selflessness and generosity.

As the song progresses, the singer seems to become more and more consumed by the present moment. The phrase "living like it's the last night on earth" is repeated several times throughout the song, emphasizing the sense of urgency and immediacy that underpins the entire track. The singer is not waiting for anyone to save her; she is fully immersed in the world and all that it has to offer. The idea that she'll be "dead soon" suggests that she is acutely aware of the fleeting nature of life and is determined to make the most of every moment.

Ultimately, "Last Night on Earth" is a song about living in the moment, giving of oneself freely, and embracing the inevitability of change. The song acknowledges that life can be uncertain and uneven, but suggests that there is beauty to be found in even the most tumultuous moments.

Their best period. Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop. Creative, bold, uncompromising, innovative. Pop was highly misunderstood by the critics. Still a pearl in their catalogue.

Jakub Kurpiński

Gerardo Aguilar Avila I can agree and disagree, Achtung is literally my favourite album of U2, although this particular song (which I hear for the first time as I'm writing this comment) seems quite awesome.
Like, besides from that I'd say it's hard to find a bad U2 album, and I couldn't really say that an entire era of theirs is my favourite, my top three would probably be Achtung, ATYCLB and SoE.

I love this album so damn much. My favorite album from them and one of the best albums ever IMO. So glad to see other commenters praising it and realizing how underrated it was, especially back in the day! I think it gets a bit more credit now. So ahead of it's time... and it aged so well!

Sive Balussou

Love the album Pop - I ran out and bought it on cassette when it came out in the 90s (my 20s) it’s way ahead of its time and will be appreciated by the young today.
