Wild Honey
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the days
When we were swinging from the trees
I was a monkey
Stealing honey from a swarm of bees
I could taste
I could taste you even then
And I would chase you down the wind
You could go there if you please
Wild honey
And if you go there, go with me
Wild honey

Did I know you?
Did I know you even then?
Before the clocks kept time
Before the world was made

From the cruel sun
You were shelter
You were my shelter and my shade

If you go there with me
Wild honey
You can do just what you please
Wild honey
Yeah, just blowing in the breeze
Wild honey
Wild, wild, wild

I'm still standing, I'm still standing
Where you left me
Are you still growing wild
With everything tame around you?

I send you flowers
Cut flowers for your hall
I know your garden is full
But is there sweetness at all?

Oh oh oh

If you go there go with me
Wild honey
Won't you take me, take me please
Wild honey
Yeah, swinging through the trees

Wild honey
Wild, wild, wild

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to U2's song Wild Honey evoke a sense of nostalgia for a time before the world was made, where the singer and their lover roamed free like monkeys swinging from trees and stealing honey from a swarm of bees. The imagery of the honey serves as a metaphor for their love, which the singer claims to have tasted even then. The song reflects on the pure and wild nature of their love, which has stood the test of time like a shelter from the cruel sun.

The song's verses repeatedly ask the question, "did I know you even then?" suggesting a belief in a deeper connection that predates this life. The chorus offers an invitation to the listener to join in this wild, carefree, and pure love by going to "wild honey." The final lyrics capture a sense of desperation as the singer asks if their lover is still growing wild while everything around them has become tame.

Musically, the song features a bouncy, upbeat melody with a prominent organ line and an infectious vocal harmonization. Bono's vocal delivery is playful and charismatic, and the energy of the song is infectious. It is a beautiful, infectious song that is both nostalgic and hopeful at the same time.
