Omen
Atrocity Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"...When the divine portion began to fade away
And became diluted too often and too much with the mortal admixture
And the human nature got the upper hand
They then, being unable to bear their fortune, behaved unseemly...

And in a single day and night of misfortune
All your warlike men in a body sank into the earth
And the island of Atlantis in like manner
Disappeared into the depths of the sea..."

[Plato 427-347 v.u.Z.]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Atrocity's "Omen" are a direct quote from the ancient Greek philosopher Plato's dialogue, the "Timaeus." Plato wrote about a time when humans were more closely connected to the divine, but over time, they became more focused on their mortal selves. This led to a decline in their behavior and ultimately their downfall. In the quote, Plato describes a cataclysmic event that supposedly destroyed the civilization of Atlantis. This event was said to have occurred in a single day and night and was a punishment from the gods for their immorality and hubris.

Atrocity uses these lyrics to convey a sense of impending doom and the consequences of our actions. The mixing of divine and mortal nature can be interpreted as a metaphor for our own struggle with balancing our spiritual and physical selves. The sudden destruction of Atlantis serves as a warning of what can happen when we fail to find that balance.
